launching a boat

Hi guys, my family and myself have relocated to yallingup. I was wondering if anyone can give some advice on where safely to launch a 5m fiberglass boat on your own if necessary? Tried launching from Quindalup, all most got the boat wet, before I got stuck in the sand with my territory rear wheel drive... Lol , wat a start..also any advice on where to head out to, to scout for good ground? Any input would be greatly appreciated.... Happy fishing.  Cheers Don

Ramps

 G'day Don,

I moved back to Perth two years ago from Duns and what I found was: Quindalup is ok for 2wd in summer or straight after the shire removes the sand that gets left there in winter.

Monahans (Abbey): Tinnie ok for 2wd but never any thing else, especially with any north in the wind.

Dolphin Rd: Haven't used in years, but I think it's much the same as Monahans.

Canal Rocks: Good on a glass off. Don't risk it if you/and or crew aren't experienced in anything other than flat days.

Eagle Bay: 4wd only.

Geographe: Perfect for 2WD and much the same set up as Hillarys.

Hope that helps.

Old Dunsborough

If you have a decky then try the old Dunsborough ramp, there's no jetty but a 5 metre boat will go in and out easily with 2 wd

Good point mate, I forgot about that one. Pretty good launching point to get into the pinkies and KG's in winter.

Agree with Mulie and Carnarvonite.

Definitly dont do Canal Rocks in anything other than the most NICE conditions and with at least a couple of other experienced crew. Far better to use the Bay Ramps until you get the hang of it all. I like Quindalup the best but i have a 4wd. Port Geographe is by far the easiest for a 2wd, and especially if you are on your own.

Council

Give the council a ring when you are thinking of going and ask when they will be clearing the Quindalup ramp, will save you a few miles driving in towards Busso

If you want to hit the four

Sun, 2012-08-19 12:44

If you want to hit the four mile reef you are better launching from Quindalup and heading NE. As the main area of the four mile that produces is directly north of Siesta Park(the big ass red and white antenna). Get in while you can as this whole area of the 4 mile is ear makred to become part of the Geographe Bay sanctuary when the Fedreral Marine Parks are implemeneted. Or you can launch from Port Geo and head NW to this same area. The reef will be in around 17-18m deep. It only rises slightly like 1-2m. Skippy are the main catch with Pinkies and Sambos likely and the odd Dhui and big KG. Key is to burley burley burley. If all you are catching is Wrasse move.

If launching from Old Dunsborough another ok place to try is the drop off in eagle bay. There is a drop off around the 15-18m mark and then further out another one around the 25-28m. If you can get a hold of a nautical chart they are easily seen. Skippy are usually caught around here, with the odd Sambo and Pinkie moving in. Also where alot of Great whites seem to pop up :)

I wouldnt worry to much about

I wouldnt worry to much about Great Whites if you are in a big Fibre Glass boat and one did come around. Enjoy the experience if one did  :)

The reports were from a few encounters by spearfishermen in Eagle Bay and divers on the Swan over the last 12 years or so. None were attacked though. I know this area used to be a favoured area by shark fisherman in past Bluewater Classic fishing comps down there, getting big Makos, Whalers, Hammerheads and even a Blue Shark being caught there one year. But otherwise its usually a very sedate location Eagle Bay and the 4-Mile.

Grace town

Try Gracetown boat ramp. Very easy but the swell need to be reasonably low
