penn 950
hi mate , your penn 950 will be fine for a bit of semi serious ballooning, i would get it spooled with either 50lb braid(full spool or 300m plus backing) or at least good 30lb mono(20lb is a bit light) you shuold get 350m+ of good 30lb mono , go for a rod around 9-10 foot in length (a bit of length will help you get away from the rocks etc), most small sharks you will hook metro (even small tigers) wiill not take more than 100-150m of line during a fight and often much less, so if you balloon out 100-150m you will still have 200-250m left on the reel . i would give your current reel a go before forking out for an overhead combo that you may not be familiar with, ive got a few penns (750-950) and they are fine for most things .

hooks and bait
id go for at least 80-100lb mono leader of 2-3m and around 1m of 100-150lb wire at the end and either single 8/0 or snelled 8/.0's good baits are either live herring or tailor/snook or from the shop try half or whole mullet or blue mackeral. cheers

I agree with everything Ryan
I agree with everything Ryan C has written. A 950 spinfisher is a pretty serious reel & can stand up to the punishment dished out by a serious fish. I've landed heaps of sharks up to 2.8m on one of mine & it has coped with them easily. They have a pretty good drag system & will hold 500-600m of 50lb braid depending which braid you choose, more than enough to cope with most things you will encounter. Honestly a 950 is more than you need to deal with bronzies & black tips. I'm sorry if it kills your sale EKUL but I reckon at 13yrs old there's no need to spend the money on a big overhead that is just overkill unless your tageting monsters.
I also use a similar rig to Ryan C for sharks, 2m 100lb mono leader, 2m of 200lb wire & snelled 10/0 gamakatsu circles. Quality ball bearing swivels of suitable size for the connection between braid to mono & mono to wire, don't use cheap swivels, you will regret it.
Just because I smile & nod does not mean I believe the crap coming out of your mouth.
All people have the right to stupidity but some abuse the privilege.
