 just balloon them out

just balloon them out ballooning works best cause when you cast it can kill your livey on impact get a rock steady rod holders for the ballooning rod and throw a few lures around while you wait

I'd be running one large single hook in the in the livey with single strand wire 80-100 lb

Yep, as Callum said, I used to use a live Spanish Flag, there's plenty that will snaffle them.

Im not sure how far 'north'

Wed, 2016-09-28 12:05

Im not sure how far 'north' you are looking at but these are my thoughts:

Ive fished Quobba quite a bit over the past couple of years and simply wouldnt bother putting a live bait in the water unless I wanted to stretch my arms on the sharks! As Dale mentioned theres plenty of Flag up there (although I find theyre a great eating fish and wouldnt waste on bait) as well as less desirable fish which you can throw out as livies, but you are most likely to find that the sharks pick them up before anything else gets a chance.

Depending on the season and prevailing conditions, spinning and ballooning are probably more productive. With spinning you can sight cast at fish and cover a lot more ground, with ballooning the work is done for you with a big dead bait splashing around. In fact our best spaniard this june took a dead garfish that was sat flat in the water beneath a deflated balloon that we couldnt be bothered to wind in.

Theres plenty of threadfin salmon to be taken off the beaches as well as Dart which might give you a better chance at decent trevally - if you're dead set on live baiting. A standard slide bait rig should do the trick to get the bait out - that way youre not wholly reliant on the fickle winds. But if you do get easterlies a standard 30-40 cm party balloon drifted out should do the damage. Similar to Callum big solid single hook in the shoulders in front of the dorsal, though I prefer multistrand wire for live/deadbaiting for the flexibility.

Callum can probably speak more comprehensively than I about kalbarri, but from personal experience I have never had issues hooking demersals or pelagics off the cliffs with dead baits (cobia, golden trevors).

From what I understand about the East coast LBG scene is that there are far less sharks, the typical live baits are hardy, abundant and mostly readily available in the same spots as the big pelagics. This isnt the case at Kalbarri, how robust are the big storm gars ar Red Bluff ...and will they be there when you want them? can you easily acquire 4 or 5 x 30cm + tailor or dart before a session? how many herring/scalies/slimies are you going to find going north?

Its an interesting idea and I would be keen to see how you go. There's some good articles in the hooked up magazine (search online - its a free publication) and theres been a few past posts on east coast LBG.

 bloody good info there

bloody good info there mulloway Hunter

sliding even casting dead baits hooked plenty of demersals and a few trevaly amber's doing this, spinning and ballooning more successful on pelagic but this is at Kalbarri not further. I find the visual aspect of helium ballooning is just awsome so that's the main way I target maks and tuna

If you decide to skip big gars I use 4-5, 8-9/0 tarpons I grabbed a few packs of storm gars off shore catch cause they can get hard to find as it warms up and these were monsters

Agree gars are great and hook

Agree gars are great and hook size recommended above perfect, sanmar make a nice cheap alternative.....5 x 7/0 tarpons, they have slightly less firm flesh so wont stay on as long as a gar but hook/bite penetration is excellent and a 60cm helium filled balloon should keep them up (so more balloons per gas tank if not using 90's).
