LB snapper

After battling the strong winds yesterday and watching a mate land a 5.5 kilo snapper and loose a bigger one at the gaff with a little help from the gaff man (me) and I didn't even get a run I decided to head down this morning. Well we didnt have to battle the winds but with not many clouds in the sky it was a bloody freezing morning. Our lines were in the water by 6:00 and within half an hour we had our first run (my rod this time) the rod went from straight to a 90degree angle in half a second . I'd just removed it from the rod holder and then SNAP a few nasty words later and I was tieing on a new rig.  One positive for me after loosing a good fish is that you know that the weak spots or chaffed line is now gone. I Baited it up cast it out and put it in the rod holder. Before I could get tension on the line I could feel a knocking on the rod grabed it out the rod holder just as the rod fully loaded up well I wasnt going to loose this one weak  spots were gone and this fish was mine. A short fight ( you have 2 show the snapper off the rocks whos boss, if you let them take line they will run you straight under the rocks) and a nice 4-5kg snapper was splashing in the shallows. We sat there for another hour and a half without another touch home by 9 and tucking into some fresh snapper. All in all for the first winter blow we did allright. Nothing like the feeling of playing tug of war with a decent snapper off the rocks. Bring on the winter storms.

That's a great landbased snapper. A great reward for battling the crappy weather.

Theres something special

Sun, 2009-05-24 11:52

Theres something special about achieving that landbased. Maybe its the difficulty as they potentially dart into the rocks, the cold wet windy weather and getting there in the nightCool

nice work

schecky and i fished

Sun, 2009-05-24 12:31

schecky and i fished hillaries last night and this mornin and it was BLOODY FREEZING!. had about 6 runs between us, with the only landed being a 5kg port jackson. we both hooked up to two different fish at the same time but we dont really know what they were. they had insane head shakes crazier than i have ever seen felt like a vibration on the line as it was running. i think i might of lost a snapper aswell, but he took the bait in the middle of the fish, were the hooks wernt....not happy

snpper for sure

Sun, 2009-05-24 18:16

that run u both had at the same time definately sounds like a snapper we usually get double hook ups when we get one. And the head shakes are very distinct with the snapper from the time they are hooked till they are sitting on the rocks. Usually the snapper bite the head first but the ones we hooked this weekend were all hitting the tail end of the bait.

jarvis walker

Sun, 2009-05-24 21:25

its a jarvis walker tough tip i thinki ts called. Not the most expensive rod but does the job. Spend 2 much money on the deepsea gear to spend  much on beach gear. Using a stella reel with 15 kg braid though that helps get the snaps in quick
