Leaking Boat
Submitted by dalaisc on Sun, 2013-12-29 17:40
The old Chivers Safari is taking water. Bilge pump keeps it afloat but it is enough water to be a concern.
Looks like it is leaking from the back but it has an inboard motor which makes it difficult to get a clear view of the area.
Has recently had the motor and leg replaced so could be that the install was not done properly.
Not 100% certain that it is leaking from the back.
Any suggestions on how to find the leak. I am thinks that we may need to fill the hull with water.

Hose
When the boat is on the trailer pop the hose in the hull and fill it up. You should be able to see where the water is coming out.
At least it worked in my situation some time ago.
Good luck and hopefully will be an easy fix for you.
Cheers

Worth a try
OR try placing a light inside boat in different places at night time. Look from outside of hull and see if you can see light coming through anywhere. That may show up a hole or crack.

Water inside
Be very careful filling the boat with water, they are designed to keep water out, not to hold water inside. Put too much in and you could be in a lot of trouble
If the leg has been off I would suspect the bellows has been pinched when refitting or the only other spot to check is the O ring on the bung isn't split.

As said be careful filling
As said be careful filling it, remember that if you were to fill it to the water line it would effectively double its weight on the trailer (Archimedes principal) minus any tankage.
trailer mightnt like it!

trailer probably won't like
trailer probably won't like it nor will the hull itself not designed to carry the weight and will only be born out on each spot where the rollers contact the hull...

Update
So we did some checking and the leak is coming from the motor. Looks like it is coming in via the exhaust. Can see the water streaming down while the motor is running but cannot see exact spot leaking.

Manifold
Take a good look where the rubber bucket attaches to the manifold, there could be a split in it or the end of the manifold has rusted away.
