Leaky Boat

The last few times out on the water my boat has taken in a fair bit of water

It seems to be getting worse - Yesterday when i removed the bungs, a worrying amount of water poured out

Boat is pressed aluminium & has a plywood floor which is difficult if not impossible to remove

Can any one give some ideas how to figure out where the problem is?

maybe a stupid question but have you actually gotten underneath it (while on trailer) and looked for holes.

sometimes pinhole corrosion can occur.

What's probably more worrying

Mon, 2016-10-17 12:25

What's probably more worrying is that you have been out several times with a leaking tub mate.
If your boat does not have points where water can enter, ie. live well pick up, screws holding brackets on etc etc and maybe leaking then it maybe time for some maintenance and pull up the floor.
Start with the basic area's first where water can enter, once you have confirmed they are good, then it maybe time to pull the floor and look for cracks, small holes, wear points, electrolysis, even sinkers sitting in the ribs for the past 5 yrs, the list is endless.

Jees Mate you sound like my ex wife

Wasnt really bad till yesterday so now i am doing something about it

Could be electrolysis - i did remove the floor 12 months ago and check for hooks & swivels etc

I may have to do it again as you suggest

Bung seals maybe?

Mon, 2016-10-17 12:28

A mate's ali boat had a similiar issue. Couldn't work out how/where water got in.  Found out that the seals around the bung bases had worn out.  Applied new silicone and all is good now.

same issue

Mon, 2016-10-17 12:40

I have just found same issue with my boat.. alloy plate boat.

so i put the bungs in and filled hull up with water until it started coming out where it was getting in..

long story short i found a hole in bottom of hull mid ship(pin hole) not a big leak but under the pressure of the boat weight and moving around.. (about 20 litres per day)

what I think has happened is a small piece of dissimilar metal has got into hull and slowly caused some corrosion.. now need to empty fuel tank remove floor and fuel tank and repair..

plus inspect my hulls internals at the same time..

Boats!! there is always something

good luck

I had a similar problem after one day out and had a good 30l pour out of the hull, I noticed the bung rubber was hard and replaced the bungs with ronstan ones and she's all good

I had an Tinny and the stainless steel rivets connecting the female bung section to the hull had corroded through and there was the thinnest strip of silicone holding the bung in place.

I would check there, then along the keel.

Per above, put in water, add the bung and wait.

Silicon

Mon, 2016-10-17 15:19

When you find the leak do not use silicon as a temporary repair as it soaks into the metal and make it necessary to cut the piece out instead of just dobbing a bit of weld on.

If its the bung leaking use sikaflex to seal it

have you got one of these near your motor well ?

if so, check it is screwed in properly, or if its plastic sometimes that can get a crack in them

Mine started doing the same thing. Turns out it was leaking where the transducer cable came through the hull. The sikaflex had deteriorated. Put new sikaflex on it now it doesnt leak.
