Two Rocks in a Tinny - any close inshore areas?

Hi al

I recently bought myself a Quintrex F390 Tinny with a Suzuki 20hp 4stroke and spent the last few months fitting it out. I bought it primarliy to throw on the camper for when we head North, however I want to test it out and was thinking of putting in at Two Rocks marina and giving it a run - check the plotter and sounder.

Will be taking a mate and our soft plastics - is there any ground close in where we could target some KG's or Flatties ?

Or is there a better place north of the river to do this?

Thanks in advance

Jorgo

Hi Jorgo. Congrats on the new

Hi Jorgo. Congrats on the new boat. For a first run I'd suggest avoiding Two Rocks. The swell that comes through just outside the marina can be a little unpredictable and with 20hp you wont be able to get out of a sticky situation quickly. I'd  head out from hillarys, travel south inside the 3 mile reef to the south cardinal. From there head west till you get to around the 20m depth. Plenty of plump sand whiting and flatties there at this time of year. Good luck!

 Yeah agree coming back in

Sun, 2016-10-09 10:57

Yeah agree coming back in can even be a bit tricky. There's a lot of huge weed clumps just around the entrance of the marina at the moment and managed to hook a huge clump heading out the other day and had to pull the donk up to untangle.

Good advise , Rosie,

a new boat , untested motor to a degree, the tubs handling new to the owner,( dont know your prev exp Jorgo , so dont take it the wrong way)

best to head somewhere wheres theres lots of traffic etc , and your right theres actually better ground for the target species around there.

And if your wanting to test yourself and tub/ camper  for beach launching, try lano on a calm morning , inside the bay theres squid , herring, whiting etc .

 As others have said watch

Sun, 2016-10-09 17:07

As others have said watch the swells out there. I fish two rocks off my yak and there are heaps of options with in 3km of the marina for all species. On a small boat i wouldn't suggest anything over 2m swell as it gets sketchy as. And make sure you keep an eye on ya sounder and charts as the ground out there is pretty crazy and lumps pop the swell up randomly and even break randomly. Previous advice here is also very good, id keep to a popular easier area if unsure. Good luck!!!!!

Burns Rocks

Sun, 2016-10-09 18:12

 Hi Jorgo

A safe place to test out your dinghy in the open ocean is Burns Rocks.  About 10-15 minute boat ride north of Ocean Reef ramp.  It's close enough to shore (to be safe) and is a great spot for bread and butter fish such as skippy and various species of whiting. Occasionally you can get BIG squid aswell.  It's also a hot spot for shitloads of wrasse, so be warned! Haha

If the weather is great, then it's only a short scoot out to the 3 mile if Burns Rocks is not producing any good fish.

Enjoy the boat and good luck!

Yeah mate

Have had many fishing adventures at Burns Rocks.  My favourite was watching my mate reel in a very large skippy. Hot in pursuit was a 2 - 2.5m shark. The skippy was jumping out of the water and the shark would follow.  Have never seen someone reel in so quick!! Awesome and funny moment! Haha!

Luckily the skippy was landed in 1 piece and became our lunch on the boat (sashimi).

Thanks for all the advice -

Sun, 2016-10-09 21:38

Thanks for all the advice - thats why I like this forum - unmeasurable amount of local knowledge on tap - while yes this is my first boat - I have spent a considerable amount of time in my best mates 680HT Barcrusher - and the two boats are vastly different!!!!

Am very happy to call myself a "newbie" and to learn from the more experienced folk on this forum. My intention is to use the tinny on those fine flat mornings and glass afternoons to target the KG's, Flatties, Snapper, Mulloway etc around the inshore area's. I have installed a Garmin 4DV CHIRP Sound Plotter to help me find the grounds. I am fast loving the Soft Plastic's fishing and both my boys (9 and 7) are keen to learn aswell. I am also looking forward to exploring the southern inlets around Walpole and Denmark over thew Xmas Summer period.

Again thanks for all the advice and keep it comming please.

Been toying with the idea of bringing my boat (6m ali) down to Espy for a bit of a fish, whats the fishing/wind/swell generally like between now and Xmas?

Maiden Voyage in the New Quinnie F390

Wed, 2016-10-12 20:12

Hi All

Today myself and a good mate made the First voyage in my new 2016 Quintrex F390 Fighter Hull - powered by a Suzuki 4ST 20hp electric/pull start - hydrofoil fitted. - Quite impressed to say the least - we had 2 solid blokes, esky full of ice and Drinkling water , tackle box, 12ltr fuel cell, Battery etc on board, estimate around the 240kgs.

Conditions where ok at first with a bit of chop on the water with a fresh NE, later dropped to nothing and glassed off -

The tinny takes a bit to get to get on the plane but once it does it gets along quite nicely - Topped out with wide open throttle on a glass water we reached 33.2 knots - that was quite impressive!!. I installed a Garmin 4DV CHIRP Plotter and Sounder - awsome unit - highley reconmend these to those that are in the market gfior anew one.

We took the soft plastics, berley and some scungy old bait - dont even know what it was - totaly not really intending to go "fishing" but thought chuck them in anyway - Well.....to say what happend the next 1.5hrs blew me away is an understatement.....

Boated - 1 x Pink Snapper - 61cm, 1 x Dhuie 58cm 2 x Samaon Fish 60+ cm - bunch of skippy/ wrasse and other shitters.

Caught but didnt land - 2 x Pink Snapper - 2 x Dhuies  and at least 3 Sampson Fish - It was action stations as both us where fishing two rods each !!!

And all of this with in view of the carpark of Ocean Reef marina and on 6 liters of fuel, unbeleivable.....

PS: Will post up some photos aftrer I learn how to....

Cracking day

I too have small craft roughly how deep were you fishing if you could see the car park?

And also where can I get some of your who knows what bait you were using ? Coz I want

some !! Or did you pick up all your fish on soft plastics ?

Cheers jorgo ! Da pirate !!

Da Pirate  As we where using

 Da Pirate

As we where using soft plastic set ups - the flurocarbon leader was only 15lb - had no net or gaff lost a few to line breaks, the visabilty was amazing, clearly see the fish at 10 meters. The bait was just scungey old squid from a number of trips ago out of my mates freezer. We didnt go any deeper than 14 meters the entire day - Directly west of the marina navigational bouys.
