Let play a game- Guess the Weight

Take from this what you will,

Over the last month or two there has been a few post on here with what i would call exagerated wieghts posted - personally it shits me and ruins what is otherwise a great fish -

Now we are all fisherman and tend to get a little excited when a good fish is boated, i have attached a photo of a Dhufish caught a recently when i took a couple mates out for a fish, when the fish was brought on board as you would expect the wieghts where bellowed out for all to here- wwwhhhhoaa look at that it`s gotta go ???????  I`ll let this run for a day or so and see what everyone reckons- then i`ll tell you what was bellowed out on Boating the fish/ estimation once the dust had settled / and actual wieght fromt the Co op scales.

I Know it`s hard not seeing the fish in the flesh but to help. Reel Thunnus 8000 ,Jig shimano slidend 160gm

This post is not having a go at anyone one personally but just to give maybe the less experianced/over exagerators a bit of an idea as to what there looking at.

Cheers Boomer

And second Adams opinion who really cares as long as you are catching great fish that look good for a pic and taste great on the plate.

Guessing length is coming

Thu, 2012-08-09 23:18

Guessing length is coming close to 95-100cm judging by the length of your Jig,and with the biggest Dhui caught on my boat by my mate going 93cm and weight 13.4kg, i would guess about 14kg?

I always like measuring fish more than weighing them. Bit harder to get a length wrong or exagerated than using rusted scales, the old bathroom scales, or good old guestimation. But its nice to always compare length to weight as somtimes a fishes girth can throw its weight out big time when compared to its length.

Almost a bit like guessing the weight of the piglet at the local country fair, and get a prize hahahaha :)

I'll say around 13 but I can almost guarantee numbers around 18-20 where shouted. I hate the people who claim stupid weights, only makes themselves look stupid and makes the rest of us honest fishermen look bad.

different opinions

Fri, 2012-08-10 08:19

isnt it amazing to see all these different opinions on weight! there have been a few overexagerations, but you have to remember every phot tells a different tale the same fish in two seperate photos can change its look and what you think of its weight! so who really cares if they want to talk it up let them! its only there selves there kidding! good fish by the way! i was thinking 14kg

Nice fish

Buz is on the emoney for me... Best indicator based on the pic is the size of the jig (given the go-go gadget arms) it is the only measurable item close to the fish to give proper perspective as the hands are hidden.

If this is a 160gram jig its about 14cm long, so that makes the fish around 80 to 90cm maybe.

A 90 cm fish can vary in weight considerably based on its condition, so judging by the pic I would give it between 10 and 12kg. (Make that 10.5kgs on the knocker) I'm probably way off but thats my best shot.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Righto, - fish was called at

Fri, 2012-08-10 10:58

 Righto,

 - fish was called at least 20kg when it first floated up wide ( as big dhu`s do ).

 - after bringing on board was called it for 18/19 maybe 20kg

I Dont normally wiegh fish unless i think there gonna go 20kg cleaned, (19.8 gilled and gutted is the closest i`ve ever come to the magical 20kg)

but on this day and being the biggest i`d caught on a jig i did, before wieghing it I called it for 15kg.

Ended up wieghing 16kg gills and gut still in.

Cheers Boomer

PS- those that called it for 9-10kg i want to come fishing where you go.

Nice fish anyway.A fish

Fri, 2012-08-10 13:20

Nice fish anyway.  Certainly illustrates how holding a fish out can skew the look

A fish should be weighed , guts in, as probably every other fisho would .    Your 19.8 would have come perilously close to the magic number if you had.

Never know for sure now.  Bugger.
