Another way I found is good to learn is get a bit of cord and a something that has a big eye to try tying knots. Much easier to watch how the knot forms when its tightened, how to tease the knot down etc.

Yeah, that is a great book Paul. A top pressie for any angler
Though I have to say I thought Mr Wilson's acting was a bit wooden on the DVD.

I've found that the knots I
I've found that the knots I use the most were the ones shown to me in tackle stores. It certainly helps your knot tying ability (as you can be shown exactly how to do it, and also have someone watch while you try it).
You only need a short list of dependable, strong knots. Here are the ones I use after much research and testing (both types ;) ). I tied and tried a lot of knots :p (and importantly got a lot of opinions from long term fishermen with lots of experience on the water, a very important part ;) )
1. The best knot is the uni knot. Easy to tie, and as long as you wet the knot, its a 90%+ knot. Very versatile (e.g. you can leave a loop when fishing soft plastics for better action).
2. For hooks, I use a double snell. The bottom hook isnt critical, you could use a uni or something else. The top hook though, I use a method that was shown to me at compleat angler. Hard to explain in text, but I can whip up an image if you'd like. It allows you to put the top hook exactly where you want it though, and its very strong.
3. For braid to mono (leader) I use a GT knot as Honsu showed me. Dont let the name deceive you, you can use it on lighter line. It puts the tag upwards, is more forgiving than a improved albright, and is very strong (if I pick the same strength leader as the main line, I often get the leader back if I have to break it). Again, I can get a pic.
4. For forming a braid loop, I use the bimini. If you are shown how to do this, its a piece of pie. Do it with your rod in a rod holder, and line going up the guides (or some if you have a light tip graphite). You make the twists, then put it on the handle and turn to remove the slack. Now you have one hand to push on the Y of the loop and one hand to guide the line around. No clumsy mouth on the tag end, no awkward knee movements or getting it tangled around your toe.
5. Rapala knot for heavier jigheads, leadheads and taikabura/octa.
www.marinews.com and http://www.fishnet.com.au/knotsrigs/knotsrigs.html have a lot of knots and rigs. I also have a text file I compiled in my search for the perfect knot if you are interested.--------------
Always interested in someone to go fishing with

the old uni-knot
I have found the old uni knot to be the most useful knot in the arsenal. Use a uni2uni for joining main to leader in <8 pound mono when an albright/improved albright is too finniky to tie.
Touch wood but to date I have never had a uni knot fail on me.
Youtube clip from a guy in south africa is very good for demonstrating how to tie a short bimini - he also has a neat way to finish it which leaves the tag end secure at the bottom of the knot. This is the bimini I use in braid now.
In general I use the following;
improved albright for braid to mono connections (>8 pound) with a uni to the terminal tackle
bimini in heavier braid with a straight albright to the leader and then uni to terminal tackle
aussie plait in 15-24kg mainlines for the double then a crane swivel to connect lures/livebait traces. uni knots used for all terminal tackle up to and including 100 pound
anything beyond 100 pound and I crimp.
interesting to hear if anyone has any improvements/suggestions...

GT
And don't forget you can just nip off the granny knot and the gt knot will unravel so you don't have to re tie your bimini if you bust up your leader.

Knots
I used to use the blood knot until i learnt the uni.
I use the uni all the time now. I am going to have a look at the gt knot now cos i dont know any knots for joining leader to braid. I use a triple palamar to join my braid to a swivel and then uni my mono leader to the swivel. I need to learn how to join braid straight to mono!!!!!!
Fishing isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more serious than that!!!
