Livebaiting Hardyheads

Just wondering what the best way to livebait hardyheads is. I usually just do through the shoulder but saw someone doing a different method the other day where his hookup rate was phenominal, they stayed on the hook well and looked like the where hooked through the head somehow. Just wondering if anyone knows any good method of rigging them up to maximise hookups and ensure they stay on the hooks longer than the traditional through the shoulder technique.

Cheers,
Adam

When ever i use live hardy heads i put the hook througth the bottom or top lip. i find it works ok.
Up north they dont usally last long before they get smashed!

Ive seen them rigged up

Ive seen them rigged up through the botton jaw for the smaller ones. Using those small but strong mustard live bait hooks i think there called. Hoodlams thats it! I use them for my smaller pusher lures and get awsome hook up rates. Rigging through the bottom jaw is strong but doesnt kill the fish, its just like catching one but i havent tried it only seen it. Like i said the smaller ones would work i think so the larger fish can swallow the whole bait. Just a thought. Cheers Chris.

Nostril

Had more success hooking hardy heads/popeye mullet up from the inside of the upper jaw and out through the nostril. Hooking them this way has the advantage of keeping the current flowing through the fishes gills and help prolong its lifespan (especially in rivers).

The secret is not trying to cast to hard as any jerk will send your hardyhead into astro space, minus the hook of course. Fine gauge hooks also help.;)

Throw nets

Groovy, will definately go through the nostril from now on rather than the back.

Also, just bought my first thrownet, a 4m version.
Has anyone got any tips for using them?

Hands only

Try and get some one to show you how to throw it using your hands only. Much easier to run and chase popeyes using this method. Nothing worse than having to drape a wet net over your shoulder (especially in a muddy river).

Once youve mastered the

Once youve mastered the correct way to pick it up keep folding the net back and forth over your left arm (saves placing it over your sholder) which frees the right arm or throwing arm to hold the bottom for throwing. Once the throwing action is out into place the net gently comes off your left arm tangle free. Basically your left side holds it and your right side throws it. 4m nets arent too bad to throw its the larger ones that are very tricky and heavy! I learnt on a 2m net then went out and brought a 4m one. There was an article in FWA not long ago about the technique and its the only one ive seen that IMO is the right way, i got taught a very simular to this and then adapted to what felt right for me. Good luck mate and dont forget that even 3 shit throws will catch the same amount of bait as 1 good one so it really doesnt matter until youve mastered it. Practise on the back lawn a few time s youll get it. Have fun.
