Local Cray report

Have had a few calls tonight .Cray boats got jack .50 pots pulled for 14kg ,divers said shit loads of shells on the bottom but crays are well back in the holes and very shy. Will get out towards the end off the week for a look,I don't think there is any big rush, will be a few days before they are out and about. But will put up a report when things start to pick up.

Hi Paul , great report not good in any terms . I dont know if anyone knows but a recent study has been conducted on the western rock lobster in its juvenile stages in life , needless to say findings are not good . Western Rock lobster reproduction rate in the past few years has been very low and is on the verge of a collapse.

they used a new system and instead of putting the new and the old side by side and comparing the two they just went all out with the new. From what i have been told and have seen he and elsewhere says the numbers are still there.Time will tell on this one

Just follow where the pros are setting their pots. They are usually spot on the money early in on the whites.

Just don't dive right on their pots or you may get a very unpleasant surprise

all the way from mindarie to cervantes the crays have been off to a bad start.

we pulled 83 pots for 8.6 kg today......... not good.

dhuboi im not sure were u got ur info from but the fisheries told us that the perallases count this year was thru the roof. infact the last 3 years have been fairly good. but hey the fisheries seem to be on completley differant pages depending on who u speak too.

as you well know being in the game Wicked is that the little buggers dont always settle where the fisheries are looking either. One year they will settle in deeper water and the panic button will go down.Laughing

hey man i agree depending on who you talk to , i was talking a to a world reknown scientist who actaully did the survey . Also a major factor is like i said ( juvenile stages) a crayfish doesnt become a big mumma over night.

the first stages of a crayfish , live and rely on oceanic currents and suspend themselves in the water column , dpending on where they did the survey is also a big factor.

Normal...

Tue, 2010-11-16 04:30

...nothing to fret about, fellas...slow starts are the norm at the beginning. You do get the odd crayboat getting his 50-60kg now but it'd most likely be a shallow running jet going hard up into the reef chasing reds, and if you're a rec potter/diver this is the most likely way of getting your bag as well. Or just do what Alfred did and go deep!

Give the whites a chance to harden up and we'll ALL be rolling in them in a week to ten days!

Its no different than any other year boys give another week or 2 water to warm up

and you guys will be cleanin up.

Good luck all the pro's i believe you guy's are on quote's anyway so i suspect you'll be fishing more the price than the kg's

Speaking of beach price is that a good start?

current

Tue, 2010-11-16 16:20

a good mate of mine studying veterinary & biomedical sciences at murdoch has been doing some research on the swan and local oceans recently for a unit. He mentioned the other day that the leeuwin current this year and last has been particulary weak and that the rock lobster reporduction rely heavily on an average to strong current to give good numbers.

also this weather at the moment with the El Nino apparently changeing influences the current and water around WA and therefore the lobster.

some info, not exactly current, but still relavant after a quick google:

http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/wf/articles/Elnino.php?9999

but hey, i'm not a scientist nor do i totally understand anything above, but just some info i've been told to add some spice to this thread.

Hello all, first post here,

Sun, 2010-11-21 18:02

Hello all, first post here, looks like a great site!

I went for a metro reconn shore dive a few weeks back and saw plenty of crays, easily accessible. Perhaps more in this spot than ever in the past. I went to the same spot on Thurs afternoon, and the amount of shed shells was amazing. I've only really been diving for them for a couple seasons and it's the first I've seen it like this. The bigger craters in the reef looked like cray graveyards! or crayveyards?.....ugh anyways. Does anyone think they all shed at the same time? ie; in the same couple days period? I saw only a few crays and they were very deep and spooky, so my uneducated guess is that they are all soft and feeling a little too vulnerable. So we may see them by this week's end if they harden up a bit? If the shed shells were anything to go by, it's going to be a good season at "my" little spot!
