locating dhufish and snapper

ive had my boat now for a couple of months and getting more confident to go out a bit further, although saying that i dont want to travel for hours to get to fishing spots, are there any reliable snapper and dhufish spots out of mandurah, im not looking to cull the species, the chances are i will catch take a few photos and release...... as i just love fishing. any help would be appreciated, also what are the rules if any for the use of reef anchors.

Cheif what you need to look for on your sounder is structure or like some people fish near some of the cray pots

Mandurah can be tough, I have only fished a bit out of there (I am north of river) and we needed to go a fair way to get to reliable reef. That being said, we landed two size dhu the first outing, so they are there.

Cray pots are a great place to start.

just a sugestion look at a chart of the area and you will see a few areas of interest (pinicles rocks etc) about 15k out to the nnw of the cut mouth these can be productive at times. Hope that helps a bit

 Don't fish mandurah no fish

Fri, 2012-08-17 14:46

Don't fish mandurah no fish here!! Haha look I have been fishing from th FFB to 250m for a while now. If you don't want to travel far there is plenty of fishing and good ground to be had! 15 - 20 mile out in depths from 20-30 m is a good place to look. You won't find much structure but small lumps and ledges .5-1m high and broken ground holding plenty of good fish. Other wise the 40-50m mark is fishing well ATM. Was put couple weeks ago got couple 12kg dhuies

Cray season

Fri, 2012-08-17 15:13

Pro cray season still open- new discussion paper indicating that there will be no season for professionals, in other words they can fish year round and target catch when prices are higher.

Mark Cray pots as you see

Sat, 2012-08-18 09:23

Mark Cray pots as you see them. They are usually on good structure.

Understand what coral looks like on your sounder too. Coral means life, life means fish, fish means bigger fish.

Yes and no really.

When the whites march is on, there can be lines and lines and they can be situated on just about nothing. OTOH, when you see a big clump of floats, either before or after the whites run, then you know they're on some structure.

big question

Sat, 2012-08-18 11:10

is that pinging? If not why not?

I do it but Im curious due to the very strong feelings many here have expressed about obtaining others marks without searching out the ground personally.

Is it ok because the cray potter doesnt know youve done it?

Craypots....Everyone does

Sat, 2012-08-18 12:48

Craypots....Everyone does it.....its like wanking....People say they don't, but they are liars. haha

Look, there's a difference between 'pinging' and marking spots. My definition of 'pinging' is cruising right up to another boat in the middle of a 'vast' ocean and purposly infiltrating his ground.

Cray pots attract fish with burley and as long as you stay clear of the pots and don't interfere with their lines (eg. hooks, drag their pots etc.) There's nothing wrong with it. After all, they're not interested in the fish.
But then, that's my opinion. I'm sure everyone has their own opinion on the topic and welcome to it. I guess you have to figure out what you feel ok with.

My favourite sambo spot for example, i found accidentally one day (massive coral lump). But then later on some pots were on there. Who said you didn't find it first? (i know hundreds of people know it) That's another thing you may think you've found 'new' ground and want to keep it a secret, then realise one day that someone else is on your 'new' ground. Trust me, when most if not all of the lumps out there are fished by someone else at some stage. They more than likely never 'pinged' you, they found it or had the marks from a friend.

Sat, 2012-08-18 23:00

I was scoping out potential fishing spots on internet sat maps. I can see what appear to be stationary boats in the sound, around rotto etc. Is this pinging?? Or should I pretend I never saw them?

do you really need to do this its a big ocean with heaps of fish. its not hard to find new spots. i found four new lumps on friday just by cruisin around sounding. got dhues on all of em. finding your own spots with fish on them feels so much more rewarding to me and keeps me learning new things everytime i go out. knowledge is paramount. i stay well clear of boats on my travells. mainly to put the other blokes mind at ease about his spot gettin nicked by some clueless fool. not saying you are mate but ive copped it heaps lately.

You may find yourself on sand if you took the marks when the whites were on the run.

Did you sound the area and see whats there?

Mon, 2012-08-20 17:33

I have just started chasing fish in perth myself, and have been getting a feed of the dhus/ pinks regularly. With no marks in the sounder and no pinging i have been heading towards contours and just sounding and sounding and sounding until i see a small lump with some nice flare.
