Wilbinga Access

Hi all,

Heading up there next weekend for a short session with a few mates. Hopefully the weed situationi is not too bad.

I'm not going to have a chance to do a reccy, and as we are arriving before sunrise I wan't to make sure we don't hit any dead ends. I know I can get in via the grove reststop - does anyone know if you can get in via Wabling Rd or whether this is gated?

Cheers,

Buschy

Was there around Flatrocks on

Sun, 2012-08-19 19:47

Was there around Flatrocks on Saturday morn. Wsnt much weed around, a few of the beachs had a little bit at there southern ends, but otherwise most places were fishable. I drove in from Two Rocks town.

By Wabling Rd do you mean the road on the West of Wanneroo Rd just past Military Rd? If so then where this Rd connects to Wanneroo Rd there is usually a big pile of dirt or sometimes big limestone Rocks, but you can usually get past them in your 4x4 with a bit of maneuvering. If you want the easier way to get to this track, just head about another 1km North on Wanneroo and take the Limestone track into the Pines on your left to the end then turn left and this will follow the pines/bush edge back onto that road to the coast. I havent been all the way to the coast that way in a while but have been down it a few kms for work last summer and it was all clear other than the main entry onto Wanneroo Rd. Check Google Maps/Earth to see there area i am talking about if its the same as what you are talking about.

Yeah Buz - I think we are referring to the same track. It's not labelled on Google Maps - but it's a few K's past Military Rd and looking at the map on google there is a neat little square lump of pine trees which are quite a distinguishing feature! I'll have to talk to some of the mapping boys at work about getting some up to date high res sattelite pics :-)

Thanks both for the update on the weed situation. Any fish around?

Latest forecast has the wind coming from the east Sat morning....hopefully it changes back to a SW!!!

Yeah....that's all we will really be chasing. No doubt have a fillet soaking in case something else comes along. The NW today won't have helped the conditions much!

Ah good stuff that nearmap!

Ah good stuff that nearmap! Nice work Pete :)

The road i was talking about is Wilbinga Rd just past Military Rd. But like i said usually you have to go the the track a bit further north along Wanneroo Rd that goes through the pines and come back down to Wilbinga. Thats the actual road that has the green tyre sign saying Wilbinga Rd. Pretty sure there is no sign where Wilbinga Rd actually meets Wanneroo, because like i said they seem to always try block it off.

But yes Wabling Rd looks like it will go all the way to the ocean too. Though for ease of getting there you are probably better off going down Wilbinga Rd then follow the coast up, but then again it could be a bit of fun to go down Wabling if its not dark and not your first time.

The road is Wilbinga Rd

Wed, 2012-08-22 10:10

and it is listed on maps. The old entrance was opposite the Military Road turn-off. The shire blocked that entrance because there was a nasty accident there a while back. They have created the new entrance about a kilometer or so further north and it goes around the pines and back to Wilbinga Road.

That's the easy part....... Once you have been shaken around for about 8kms on Wilbinga Rd you will come to some farm gates. There are 3 tracks. The left hand gate/track takes you south west and comes out close to what we call "Flat Rock". Not sure where the straight ahead or middle track goes but it's pretty ordinary. The gate on the right will take you north west and bring you out near the shacks. Take it easy as there is a lot of limestone cap rock and often dirt and quad bikers tearing the place up. Not to mention some pretty hooney 4x4 drivers.

Generally, I use the Two Rocks entry as most of my fishing is south of the shacks. The entry via Wilbinga Grove rest area takes you to the northern part of the coastline which we generally refer to as "Loonies". Weed can be a real problem up that way and the beaches get really soft. The track from the grove is a long one an I HATE it for a number of reasons.

As for species there are many and varying. Unlike lazy young Rig, I tend to mix it up to make the trip worthwhile. Tailor are by far the most targeted species when the conditions are right. Soaking fresh fillets can result in all sorts of hookups including sharks, rays and Mulloway. Personally, I like to burley up and use my small gear to chase Herring, Whiting and Storm Gar. Some of the Herring and Gar can be quite a deal larger than the norm.

I hope the above helps you Buschy. If you allow time then do a bit of exploring when you go.

The quick and the dead mate

Wed, 2012-08-22 10:29

In years gone by the above info would have been "secret" but ever since I showed a few mates in there the secret is no longer so I figure it's just best to help out. I still have my favourite spots but there must be some 15 kms or more of fishable coast up there.

Thats it mate. I honestly

Wed, 2012-08-22 10:39

Thats it mate. I honestly reckon the age of free satellite imaging(google earth and nearmap) have really opened up landbased fishing, or even just 4x4ing, camping and other outdoor activities. I know some of my spots i fish down south i meet people and someimtes i'll ask 'what brought you here' and you get the reply 'i saw it on google earth and thought id check it out'. I mean to tell the truth thats how i first discovered fishing around Wilbinga about 6 years ago(before i joined FWrecked), just snooping around on Google earth for fishy looking areas.

It has definitly opened up my list of fishing spots along the coral coast, as alot of the spots up there(other than those with roads and carparks to them) are still relatively unknown or not talked about. Probably like Wilbinga was about 10 or 15 years ago :)

But thats always the risk of showing other people, no secret can ever last. I guess my trick is to usually show my mates so many spots when i take them landbased fishing that they ALL look good and so i dont have everyone just crowding the one spot. Same when i am feeling nice and give out boating GPS coordinates to help a mates out. I always give them HEAPS, rather than a few, some good, some not so, jus tso they dont just flog one area and have to filter thtrough all the spots to see which spots they like and what works for them. Sometimes its easier to just overload the system with to much data than try to hide a little bit :)

Thanks all

Appreciate the input - I've been up there once before and have also done a little exploring. Kind of know what to expect and know the spots, but didn't really know exactly where they were....if that makes sense. I normally fish Cervantes and beyond! Thanks for the advice.

Agree re: Sattelite imagery, however I'm sure we all have our secrets still. I know I do. It's usually the places that people drive straight by that throw up the surprises. :-)
