Long nose Emperor bag out

Nikko will put a full report up later on but we just had an interesting trip. No Red Emperor or Large Mouth Nannygai but we bagged out on Long Nose Emperor. Big ones too. Biggest went just shy of 80cm with most over 70cm.

just curious about the bag limits over in Queensland.

Looks generous compared to what we are restricted to in WA.

Eating quality

Wed, 2015-09-02 15:08

I've never caught one or eaten any what are they like on the eating quality scale.
I have eaten plenty of spangled emperor and find them really good, I'm guessing that they (long nose) would be pretty close in taste as they are closely related.

 The general feel is over

The general feel is over this way is that they are better than Spangled Emperor. A lot of anglers don't like spnagleds too much and even throw them back yet they welcome the long nose. They don't curl up on the plate as much that's for sure. My opinion is that they are better but hard to tell apart. I'm not sure about those really big ones though. Will let you know how they go on the chew. When filleting the flesh on the little ones was noticeably 'better' than the spangleds we caught and the larger long nose.

IMO not as good on the chew as spanglies but not too bad that you wouldn't keep them if you were short of a feed.

They go bloody hard

tend to be big at Ningaloo but not that common. Caught a small one on a jig this year, but nearly all our others have been 6kg -plus. Caught one at 89cm on a whole gear this year meant for a big spaniard on 50lb, jeez they go Mostly release them, small one cooked up well.
