looking 4 a new rod - my pet hate.

Actually I enjoy looking for any new fishing tackle but I have yet again come across my pet hate - don't read any further if you don't want to hear a "whinge".

Looking for a few new rod/reel combos , having problems with rod choice as most of the rods I like have split butt designs which I hate, I reckon 80% have split butts.  :-(

Would love a few of the Shimano T curve travel rods so I can fly with them or not have to worry about the wife/kid slamming the door on them but again all have split butts.

Why do I hate them so much - the bare blank part of the split butt seems to always sit on the edge of the rod holder and it slippery and it feels like it wants to jump overboard on a strike.

Also when in the rocket launcher it also sits on the bare blank bit, my thoughts are that countless thumps over waves and resulting jarring - smashing on the bare blank can't be good for structural integrity over the long term.

Thinking I may have to get the rod I want and then pull the reel seat and lower grip section off and them rebuild it to a full bottom grip (most of the ones I've looked at have the reel seat as part of the grip hence the reel seat to be done as well, will make the rod more expensive but can't seem to find any other way around it.....

Thanks I'm finished now!!

P.S if you can't tell I'm on a self imposed alcohol free binge (and feeling like a nice ale or bourbon would be nice about now)!!

Cheers :-)

Split butts?? You sure your alcohol free

Having said that Paul I dont see the wear as an issue. Almost all my rods have this configuration, and since I carry a porcupine like rocket launcher if it was going to be an issue I am sure one would have "let" go. The only rod with s split but that has ever broke on me was a ATC rod I bought when I first went up to Karratha. It was used for jacks etc Shore based, and just "exploded", but it never sat once in a rod holder.

Ha guess I asked for that, Yeah I bloody know I'm not drinking - going to the pub for mother in laws B'day dinner so going to be tested tonight!!  :-0 :-)

I figure the butt is probably the strongest part of the blank but given some of the distances covered in mates boats (and mine to a lesser extent) and some of the pounding over waves I just dont know I'm 100% comfortable with the pounding being on the bare blank rather than cushioned by eva grips etc.

throw a lure on a rod and troll with it in the rod holder then hold the rod lightly and lift up and you'll see how much more they feel like they will jump out of the holder and into the drink Vs one with an EVA grip which tends to grip the edge of the rod holder - I know I could attach a security strap just in case but is still more of a pain.  I'd just rather a normal bottom grip.

I agree with you although I have a split rear grip rod but a custom one and ensured it was designed so the top section was still inside the holder so rested on the EVA which made it perfectly fine. If it doesn't do that it's a real PITA.

the original t curve 200 splits at the foregrip so breaks down fairly small. Not sure what your application is though?

Yeah my monster mesh has a split butt and given I find it a PITA to the point I tend not to use it - so I vowed never to get another, hate finding rods I like all apart from the split butt - limits my choices dramatically,

At the moment I am hoping to get a couple of rods that I can travel with (either proper travel rods or at least two piece so I can put them in a reasonably small tube) however coming up against my old foe - the good travel rods have split butts and will be using them on the boat more often than travelling. Probably want to cover 10kg,15kg and 24kg (possible trip to Fiji or Nthn Aust on cards for next year).

Liam have 2 Catalinas (PE 4 Hiramasa and PE 6 both from Ray and Annes) - love them to bits but unfortunately are one piece. Other than that wouldn't hesitate to get another.

Cheers

Agree Paul, split butts are form over function, wank factor!

I have a couple,  they do look quite nice and all the young bucks on board recon they are cool......all good till I have to troll with them and wince at the thought of a big hit and snapping at the split as it hits the rod holder.......

Just gaffer tape some of that tennis racket handle stuff on it.......will look crap, keeps the old boys amused and the young punks annoyed. Perfect.

Similar to you JohnF. Split grip rods get a stubby holder taped around them.

Cheers John and Dodgy, was thinking similar of getting some EVA and running a split along it and then taping to the rod either that or if I can be bothered I might just dismantle and rebuild the but end to a full grip.

If you are looking to something like this I reckon you should look at slicing some Eva open and slotting it on the section. You can then put some of that X grip shrink wrap over the top and you would never know it used to be a split grip. You may need to use a filler on the ends to get an even bottom layer before you put the shrink wrap on

Thanks Bunny that's actually an excellent solution - as taping something on always ends up with sticky crap everywhere after a bit of sun exposure - will keep it in mind.

Might give it a try on the monster mesh and see how it goes

Cheers

Bicycle handlebar cork tape

Mon, 2013-11-18 18:13

Bicycle handlebar cork tape would be another option, probably similar to tennis racket handle wrap but maybe a bit thicker.  You just need to finish one end with electrician's tape or shrink wrap.  The good stuff is sweat and sun resistant, so I'd guess it would do OK with saltwater, and you can just replace it if it gets a tear or wears out.  There are sticky (have a small strip of two-sided tape running down the center of the back) and non-sticky versions available, in different colors and thicknesses.  The sticky ones tend to leave a some residue on whatever they're wrapped around, which you'll notice it if you unwrap it, but it doesn't go all over in use.  The real cork seems to usually have the tape, while the EVA doesn't need it.

My bigger pet hate is the line clips on most spools. Why bother putting a line clip on the spool when they don't even work properly? Anything over 20 pound line they simply can't handle and they are weaker than a stale breadstick
