Looking for a fishing spot ___Amended: I.e. Deckie available

Well, after about 2 weeks of failed, just missed or cancelled trips and some rather unproductive land based sessions I think I need to get out and catch something decent. Anything bigger than a herring really, so not too fussy.

Is anyone heading out sometime in the next several days (any day bar sat late morning-midday) who could do with a deckie? Particularily to the FADs FAD as I still want to catch one of those elusive dolphinfish, but other kinds of fishing are fine.

Or perhaps even someone heading out of the city for a few days fishing trip who doesnt mind someone tagging along?

Have gear and chip in for fuel/bait/etc as per usual

Hmm, looks like I should go fishing for trout and use the crickets that are chirping as live bait...Tongue out

Well, after having eight

Sat, 2008-05-17 13:44

Well, after having eight spots be taken by someone else despite me being in first, one failed trip due to a stuck anchor, snapping my brand new rod tip, loosing my favourite and most expensive squid jig and loosing my only pair of prescription glasses, all in a little over a week, I really think I need to get out there and catch something.

Theres been at least 5 other threads after I posted this one, all with replies, so I have added the seemingly important word 'deckie' to my title. Hopefully someone out there is able to help me out.

Matt You must understand

Sat, 2008-05-17 16:19

Matt You must understand that lots of skippers have regular deckies or folks that have asked them long ago and are still on the wait list.

Ultimately, the skipper will have the last say, regardless of who asked first. The skipper is the one who paid for the boat, the insurance, outfit cost, on going maintenance etc and usually has about 30-80K invested. They can choose or not choose who ever they please! Splitting fuel and bait doesn't come close to the actual "On the water for a day" cost.

A good read is Andy Mac's "the perfect deckie" lots of tongue in cheek but with many good points. Go dig up an old issue and check it out.

Oh - an be patient you will get a ride.

Its always at the skippers

Sat, 2008-05-17 17:16

I understand if theres no spots available, but that wasnt what I was getting frustrated at.

Its always at the skippers choice, the deckie is at their mercy :p Its just a bit frustrating when it happens so many times within a short space of time. It would be no probem if there were no spots available but considering there were something like 4-5 posts after mine that all got replies and offers, just wondering whether its cause of thread title, content, or perhaps just me :p. Sure, skippers have the say (rightly so of course), but if 8 have chosen someone else instead of you then it can understand why it might get a little frustrating. Having such bad luck land based is just compounding it atm :(

I certainly understand that if you PM people asking for a spot that theres a high probability they wont be going out or have someone allready (but I never expect a spot in that case), but i'm only talking about spots where people are looking for deckies.

Sorry if it sounds a bit ranty, i'm just not having a good week(s) (and the above was just the fishing stuff too).

Consider yourself lucky, you haven't been around long and you have already been out on MacAttack.

Patience wasnt the problem

Sat, 2008-05-17 17:44

Patience wasnt the problem fishcrazy.

The trip on the good ship MacAttack was my most successful fishing session so far (though Andy and everyone out there said it was a really horrible day, so you know how my trips usually go then, lol). I knew that was a rare opportunity though and just managed to get it (plus had cancel something the same day).

Renamed

Sat, 2008-05-17 17:48

We renamed the MacAttack to - KILL TANK - Alfred Surprised.

And yes a trip out with Andy is not something that comes along often.

I've posted up before and

Sat, 2008-05-17 18:10

I've posted up before and didnt get replies, but that doesnt bother me. I dont mind if skippers PM other people getting deckies (as mentioned in convo). I dont mind if some guys choose someone else first. Its just a bit frustrating when there are so many spots that slip through your fingers after you've allready had a really bad week. You know those times when everything just goes wrong continually. Straw on the camels back so to speak (though the fishing stuff was only part of it)

I'm not looking to become a 'prefered deckie' or beat any preferred deckies either. )I do try to help out with whats needed out on the boat, and offer to clean after as well as chip in over half though)

I used to hitchhike a lot

Sat, 2008-05-17 19:16

I used to hitchhike a lot when I was younger and it did lead to a thought at a local boat ramp.

How about a thumb out, a sign that says "FADs or bust" and a little esky of bait, perhaps a livewell full of herring?

I'm not sure all those boats go out full, and you might get a go when another deckie doesn't front, forgets the bait, skipper is a bit skint or just wants some company?

I wonder, would it work?

Any tips are welcome.

Sat, 2008-05-17 18:29

Any tips are welcome. I appreciate the time you guys are spending to help me out. I usually dont get offended (and had no problems getting the tone of your message even without the brackets, :p) and have a sense of humour, but I think not being able to drive for the next week+ just pushed over what I can normally deal with (and most stuff doesnt phase me). Tone is hard to get across in text, so I think some of you guys are thinking my tone is a little worse than it actually is.

As for the wording, because a lot of the guys dont know me all that well, I wanted to make it a bit more personable rather than just being abrupt and presumptious.
