Looking at a new 4x4

Just curious as to what others opinions are on this subject.

We are looking for a 4x4 extra or super cab not dual cab as we will be getting a slide on camper to sit on the tray so we can still tow the boat when we go on holidays.

The dilemma is most of the 4 bees are a 4 cylinder and anything bigger seems to be a bit too old or out of our price range. Looked on line at some cruisers and f250 but the price is right up there for even a 20 yo car.

How would the newer 4 cylinder diesel motors hold up with the weight . I feel you would have to work them too hard and they wouldn't last too long . Need something that will hold up for a long time. Was thinking need to go at least 6 cylinder.

Any input would be appreciated.  Don't want to spend the coin then find out it won't work

 i have  v8  79 series

Wed, 2022-07-20 16:19

 i have  v8  79 series cruiser and a navara stx 2005 2.4 4 cylinder

towing the boat -Big boat - probs a bit over 3500kg if i fuel up with all diving gear etc. on it- but i dont admit to it

both uses same amount of fuel up to exmouth towing, both sits at whatever legal speed is - cruiser is spartan at the best of time - 1 cupholder - but 5 ashtrays

however on the ramp when pulling the boat out or on sand etc the cruiser kicks ass, u can drop it into low range without having to lock front diffs, navara u gotta rev up and drop clutch, i have replaced clutch with a  heavy duty clutch2 x    300K on clock

crusier being heavier etc feels better towing - more like u got control

DONT BUY the manual small 4 cylinders go auto

look at your gvm with slide on and boat - slide on are heavier than u might think

v6 pajeros are cheap as chips 2nd  hand btw- most have never seen dirt or beach

Depends on the car and engine

Wed, 2022-07-20 17:23

I used to tow a 650R Haines Hunter, about 2400kg in total, with a 4 cyl Prado.  It towed quite well, not a rocket ship but at sensible speeds and driving expectations it did fine.  Used to get about 14-15L per 100km.

Mon, 2022-07-25 17:03

I believe their popularity has pushed the price up a bit.
I got both my sets from City Discount Tyres in Cannington and they did a good deal on both sets. Fair bit cheaper than bfg's/ coopers/ toyo etc.

Mon, 2022-07-25 18:22

i run MT on my 200 cruiser and and i am on my third set of MT at 300,000kay. had other brands up to 90,000 and then went to MT by default and the first set lasted 90,000 and they still had more in them but i came down from Cheela Plains station to Mount Augustus station after the broome floods a few years ago and the road was rough asf and tore a big chunk out of them down to the steel belt and still drove home to Mandurah on it approximately 900kays. the guys at peel tyres comments where this is why you buy MT. the hole missing out of the tyre was about 30mm x 30mm. they are noisy tyres but i rate them.

 Most modern dual/extra cabs

Thu, 2022-07-21 06:22

Most modern dual/extra cabs will handle that no problems power wise . I tow a 3 tonne boat with a new bt50 and it does it really well. I would be more concerned about the combined weight of the slide on camper and tow ball weight of the boat. Even with a GVM upgrade you might struggle to be legal. Need to do sums on weight. Batteries, water, camping gear etc will add up quickly.

 Have a 2.8L prado and a V6

Thu, 2022-07-21 08:56

 Have a 2.8L prado and a V6 amarok.

Amarok is chalk and cheese in comparison. So much torque and you dont feel the tub on the back. Prado you can defintely feel it and does struggle more, especially on hill climbs or towing up north.

Before the amarok had a 2020 Colorado with the ''500nm'' they advertise and even that I personally did not rate at all.

If you plan on doing a lot of towing the v6 is a game changer in comparison to any 4cyl. Wether it be amarok, new ranger or anything else. Cant replace displacement

Nice one! The XLS Sport comes

Fri, 2022-07-22 10:12

Nice one! The XLS Sport comes without the 'blackout' pack as standard which i quite like.

We origionally aimed for a Hilux but hopping into a $50k Lux then a $50k Ranger, I feel the ranger is far better bang for buck and reflects 15 years of technological advancement. One of the $50k Lux's we looked at had 49,000km on it and was three years old, with rust under the bonnet. The ranger was brand new with 38 km on it

I would honestly tell you things to look out with them that go wrong but am yet to find anything.

Hence us getting one of the last of the PX's. New Dmax looked good and would have been my second option.

New ranger is out now and I hear that some of the the V6's have been recalled due to a vibration issue causing snapped tail shafts.

Fri, 2022-07-22 11:38

Looks good Russ! A retired family member has a 2018 Ranger and it's curerently about 40km west of Marble Bar with van in tow. I couldn't tell you how many k's they have done as grey nomads but they spend 6 months away every year so it's plenty! Had to get some suspension mods done but other than that they love it. He is an ex-RAC patrolman and this is his second ranger after a terrible experience with a lemon Nissan Patrol.

If we go with the ranger , after we get the slide on we may need the upgrade on suspension.  Looking at all the specs total combined legal weight is 6000kg so we might strike it lucky . Looked at cruisers and the prices are out there. Never even looked at the patrol

Fri, 2022-07-22 14:37

I upgraded my with a package from Driveline Services in Canning Vale. I got their 'Comfort Ride' package which is specific to the rangers.

Constant 400kg in the rear and constant 200 in the front. Handles the boat and tub full of gear as well as it handles it empty when i have a tub full of air.

Bt50

Thu, 2022-07-21 20:27

I bought myself a 2022 BT50 for work, honestly only bought it for the running gear (4JJ3 ) . I've got the extra cab as I like the room behind the seats with the suicide doors and rarely use a full length tray . Car is nice to drive with enough power and good on fuel with either my toolbox on the back lightly loaded or towing a boat  ( will get it re programmed soon though ) .What I am starting to find annoying though is the driver aids . While they can be turned off or lessened to some degree they still bring up a series of warning lights on the dash telling you they are off ! Yes I know that I turned them off ! Also the reversing beeper too , if the rear cameras pick up something while say backing out a driveway it beeps fine ,no worries but it keeps beeping constantly until the object has gone so it's a pain in the arse if you've got heavy traffic behind you sitting in reverse hoping someone will kindly let you out,the stupid beeper is going nuts !
Probably should have done a bit more homework on the rest of the car first but I'm very happy with the running gear .
Also too the prices of low k late model extra cabs in any of the brands wasn't worth , I only had to chip in an 10-15k for a brand new car with 5 year warranty and all the options and accessories I wanted dealer fitted .
Hope that helps cheers Carl.
