looking for a rod- 9ft rated 10-16lb what are my options?

Hey guys im looking for a rod about 9ft that is rated to about 16lb that will flick metal lures 10-40grams off the rocks for salmon, frigates, rat kings, stiped tuna, bonito etc.

At the moment the only two rods ive seen is the daiwa saltwater 8ft 17lb and the starlo stix shorespin 9ft 10kg,

Are there any other options out there?

Thanks

You are a bit restricted with 9 foot There are a lot of 6 and 7

Wed, 2009-04-15 15:29

footers, a few 8 and 8 1/2 but not many 9. The Starlo is a great rod, but there can be a real issue with the guides.

If you have the bucks go for the G Loomis or a Xzoga.

thanks for all the replies guys, my budget is around 200 dollars but of course the cheaper the better.

I already have the xoga 40lb 10ft rod i think its called mastery, this is the prime rod for heavier spin work, but im just looking for something lighter to cast smaller weights like 10-40gram.

Have a look at a Snyder Glas

Wed, 2009-04-15 16:25

Have a look at a Snyder Glas or Pacific Composite PPG Spin blank if you get a chance. They have a nice light tip are composite (graphite/glass mix) and build into a really nice rod. Had 1 to spin Jervis bay ledges on the east coast. Can dead lift a 1.5kg bonnie out with it but still cast a 15gm lure a fair distance. Probably go pretty close to $200 made up with budget Fuji giudes and keeping it simple!!!

Wed, 2009-04-15 19:47

shimano nexave southern spin 902, is a 9ft rod with exactly the same blank as as the starlo stix but with better guides and finish. Cast metal slices a long way, and its cheap.

What makes you say the blanks are the same? From what the guys at bluewater say, its supposed to be rated a bit higher, and it feels a bit stiffer than the starlo.

Thu, 2009-04-16 09:37

thanks shizz, I'm just looking into the xogas, i have the mastery 10ft 40lb, its rated 40lb and max cast weight 150g, which doesnt really feel like this in real terms, i fish 6kg of drag on it and 30lb braid and casting 80 grams comfortably.

So im just wondering, although the master 8ft3 20lb is rated max cast weight of 40g, will it be able to fish 15lb braid and throw lures up to 40 grams? or will i need to go the 8ft5 25lb model?

the 25lb model doesnt have the lowriders, but has anyone had expereince with the guides anyway? which is better? also what size reel would suit this rod? im looking at a shimano or daiwa 4000 class is this too big? is it more of suited for 3000 class

Cheers

I have an 8'5" Xzoga. It would be ideal for what you are looking at. A 3000 or 4000 would be ideal. I have matched mine up with an Abu Garcia Soron and that works nicely.

Thu, 2009-04-16 11:28

I've got two xzogas, and one of Honsu's egi force squidding rods and they all have a 'progressive taper'. I.e. they bend a fair bit for a light load, but can keep cranking up the power, which makes them quite versatile across different line classes. E.g. my squidding rod (well, I use it for other stuff too :p) is rated to PE1.2 (at least 12lb), but if I set it for drag for 4lb line, it still has quite a reasonable bend. Same with the boscos.

I dont see why the 20lb model wouldnt be sufficient for 15lb. If you're worried, take a scale and test load it up in the shop.

Thu, 2009-04-16 09:44

Lemax have a couple that might suit, there's an 8ft Black Rose that's rated 10-30lb and 40g lure weight, the other one's the Blue Mountain, 9fter, 10-30lb, lure weight 50g.  Both are over-rated at 30lb IMO, especially the Blue Mountain which has a pretty light tip.  Could be worth checking out?

Also there's a glass 9ft Penn Powerstick (?) that's rated at 5-8kg which is about the range you're looking for.  Average rods but.

Thu, 2009-04-16 10:23

thanks guys, with the lemax rods, are the ratings close to the true rating? 30lb might be  a bit too heavy for me but if it's actually a bit lighter than what it's rated the 9ft one might be a good option for me.

Where is the best place to buy lemax from?

Cheers!

I've got the 8ft Black Rose

Thu, 2009-04-16 10:47

I've got the 8ft Black Rose and there's no way I'd put 30lb on it... I'm currently fishing it with 7kg and I don't think I'd go any higher. V nice rod with a 3500 / 4000 size reel on.

I haven't used the Blue Mountain but from what I can remember of it it's very light in the tip so if I was to use it I'd be sticking around the 5-7kg mark. Don't quote me on it though.

Best place to check them out is Anglers' Spot in Willetton because they've got them all but Ryan's got a few in Oceanside (I think Honsu's got/had a 5ft Blue Mountain actually), Nedlands Compleat Angler... Rangers Ozzy Park... I think the Tackle Shack sells some or used to... might be some others but they're the main crew I think.
