From the picture i can see a bit of green which would indicate you have standard gprs coverage but no 3g. Telstra would most probably be the only telco with 3g mobile coverage up there. http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/networks/coverage/index.html

if you south of Light House
if you south of Light House and in the park, then only a NextG system with an external aerial will give you reliable cover.
Also HUGE... I say it again HUGE difference between modems in coverage / reception. the normal give-away with the deal usb ones that don't have an external aerials have far less coverage, than the Aircards that have external aerials. I just been through this up at Fortescue Road House. so choose wise, faster is not better if you can't get reception...

Just went through the same
Just went through the same thing. The only 2 I found that worked up here are Telstra and Optus. The Optus one (as told by the salesman) was only going to be as fast as dial up because it was out of their broadband "fast" zone. Ended up getting pre paid Telstra and chucked $100 credit on which gets me 6 gig but the only downer is unused credit expires monthly. You can chuck less on obviously but you get considerably less downloads. Speed is ok but nothing great.
