Looks like we are not the only ones with concerns

Recreational fishing cited as a safety risk
Recreational fishing could be banned from the main wharf at Port Lincoln in South Australia for safety reasons.

It is among the recommendations of the Eyre Peninsula ports master plan released by the region's development board.

Local MP Liz Penfold says a loss of recreational fishing from the wharf would change the very fabric of Port Lincoln.

"We will lose so much of our amenity - we drive down there with our tourists, we take our children down there, we'll take our grandchildren down there," she said.

"That that access be cut off as it has been cut off in other places and I would hate to see that happen.

"We will lose part of what makes Port Lincoln Port Lincoln."

The plan urges that recreational fishing be discouraged from the main wharf for occupational health and safety reasons.

It says a steering group should be formed to decide the most appropriate course of action and involve Port Lincoln council, grain handler ABB, Flinders Ports and the local recreational fishing club.

The master plan also urges that the Parnkalla trail be re-routed away from the wharf for safety reasons.

A recent public rally at Port Lincoln saw fishing crews protest about a plan for mining industry exports from the area and prompted a suggestion that wharf facilities be relocated further north, so that tourism could become the main focus of the Port Lincoln waterfront.

Colin - occupational health and safety reasons.

I seem to recall that they used that reason for closure of access to all the wharfs in Ftle Inner Harbour too. Then it was for security reasons. Apparently OH&S isn't an issue at E-Shed - can't fathom the difference.

Was a sad day when we lost all that access.

We need more landbased options, not less. Hope they don't change their mind about the Eshed.

Inner harbour #1

Thu, 2008-06-26 11:14

Yeah the freo inner harbour was where I started my love of fishing. The old man (now deceased) used to take us 3 boys down there at weekends. We'd fish at #2 landing where there was a 'stepped' down jetty - just above the water line - great for dropping down a burley sinker for small skippy.

We'd also walk around the supports of the main wharf and fish for 'horse mackeral' (big blues). It used  to be shoulder to shoulder for a 10 meters - with everyone using a handline with a single hook and bait or guts on. The the horsies would come rampaging through. You could get as many as 40 lines all knotted together - with some angry horsies hanging of the 'spaghetti mess'. Absolute mayhem! LOL

Then there was number 10 landing that they built on the north side - down near the bridge. We used to catch tailor there in the middleof the day. They'd hide in the shaddow of the ship and ambush your bate - whitey or bluey.

We also used to fish under the main wharf as their is a walkway underneath. There was some huge skippy under there. We used to try and catch them using a blob of burley about the size of a tennis ball on (laughing) - hi tech stuff! God help us if they had've tacked the burley. Pylons here we come me thinks LOL!

Wish it was still open. What a lot of fun you must have had there.
