Loop Droppers
Submitted by dunkyboy on Tue, 2012-02-07 08:29
I usually tie up my paternoster rigs for snapper with two droppers from 3 way swivels, I was thinking of changing to using twisted loop droppers and looping the hooks on rather than tying knots, I have noticed some of the charters rig up like this, I have been reading up on it on the net and opinion seems to be divided on the best set up, I was wondering what you guys use ?
I have read that using twisted loop droppers can create a potential weak link in your rig, is this true ?
be interested in any advice / opinions you have

Never had any problems with the dropper loops failing, plus all the pre made ones are tied like this.

I dont fish from a boat, but I do use dropper loops a lot when fishing from the shore. But whenever I get badly snagged, the line ALWAYS breaks at the dropper loop.
Having said that, it is usually after I put a LOT of pressure on the line. If I was using 3way swivels, it probably would have broke at the swivel knot anyway.

When i used to fish bait , i went through the rigs with 3 way swivels , lumo beads and all.
in the end it was just arse ache tying them up. took ages too
went back to twisted droppers . much easier , very strong and you don't have a swivel waving about in front of the fish
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

i was also wondering the same thing
i'm gonna change to knots.I heard 3 way swivels scare the fish away on deep drops.or is that fiction?

There is a weak link with swivel anyway.I Like to keep the rig as clean as possible and have never lost a fish to a knot breakage only to the mono being chewed through. But that's hopefully about to change with the new tough trace I'm going to try out.

Nice shiny gold swivels only
Nice shiny gold swivels only attract the bolt cutters to your rig... Especially when fishing the waters around gnarloo. only use black hooks and swivels now and have reduce my bolt cutter episodes by more than half when compared to others on the boat at the same time..
Never lost a fish to a failed dropper loop yet. Straightened hook yes but not a knott fail or loop failure..

i agree with the gold swivels attracting bolt cutters
but i disagree with the swivels scaring the fish i use the black three ways and have never had a problem with them! and i use massive stainless hooks and still catch plenty of fish

so in my opinion the hooks dont seem to attract the boltcutters either
