Loving the Tuna - Saturday 29/1/11
Well with cyclone Bianca bearing down on us we weren't to sure what was install for us when we turned up at Woodies Saturday morning. As we headed out it looked pretty sh!t with lightening and rain coming over GI. As it hit we decided to stop and do some squidding as we couldn't see where we were going and that rain sure does sting when your moving. Luckily after half an hour it had passed and the weather for the rest of the day was great.
Headed to my usual trolling spot but decided to do a few drifts first over some lumps but came up empty handed. After a few hours decided to go for a troll and got smashed straight away. Ended up with 8 tuna landed, 6 bluefin and 2 stripeys (I think that's what these are?). Then fisherys decided to pay us a visit, they were very nice chaps, did the usual inspection of our catch and then were decent enough to show us on their sounder where a nice patch of demersals were (I need to get me one of those big sounders). Marked the spot and did a few drifts. Ended up getting a bunch of small snapper and being smashed 4 times by what I expect were Sambos. Landed one of the smaller ones...
Then it was time to go back in as the dark grey clouds started to roll in over Rotto. Thought we'd beat it in but we got smashed about 1km out from the ramp. All up a good day. Hadn't taken my brother and his missus out for a while and they ended up with their frist Tuna. The first one went 8kg so in a couple more months they will be stonkers.

So whats the go to try find
So whats the go to try find some of these tuna in the sound? Do you have to be out past garden and carnac or can you actually get them in the sound?
Ive never caught a tuna so it would be awesome to get onto some. Ive heard you just need to look for the birds on the water with the baitfish and then troll through those areas.
Any particular lures to use? Would gold twistys do the trick?

Silstar Christmas trees ($6
Silstar Christmas trees ($6 rigged) and Halco Laser Pros ($13 as seen in the pics, any with a metallic silver bottom work great). 35m of water, south side of rotto and line yourself up with the eastern tip of rotto. I don't look for birds as the birds only seem to be around when there is no wind or swell and the water is milky flat. Seeing we live in WA that never bloody happens. I just drive around looking for the massive schools of bait fish on my sounder and troll over them. They have been congregating around the same spots for the past 3 months.

if you were south side rotto
if you were south side rotto , we were fishing some lumps when fisheries came and checked us too.
they pulled someone in what looked like a striper and transfered the skipper to their boat ???????
we got dusted 3 times in a row on the 30lb outfits by either big sambo's or ytk's on those same lumps . as soon as they felt the hook , it was a drubbing on the reef , no questions. dirty b@stards. did get a smaller sambo up tho.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Yeh, south side of Rotto,
Yeh, south side of Rotto, just as you get in line with the Eastern point in about 35m of water. I wish I had a striper, I'm in a small quinnie. Could have been me you saw but I was getting a lesson in expensive sounders, maybe the skipper of the striper was getting a lesson in bag limits and sizes, LOL.

got spooled on saturday!!
Nice work but what a shit of a day for some.
in the water 4:45 waiting for you.
folllow you out to the spot. trawl the same area for no fish. same trawling speed and lures but no tuna.
Time to change your name to TunaWhisperer GP!!
Got spooled on a peppermint tree driving home. Had the rods still in the rod holders when driving home. Around the corner from the house the Twisty hooked a big one and it wouldnt let go. Sums up my day really.
Now i have an excuse to get some braid!!
Cheers

How do those peppermint trees
How do those peppermint trees cook up? Is there a special marinade you prepare for them, LOL. Lay the rods down in the back of your boat next time.
