lowrance structure/side scan hds10/8

just wondering if anybody have/used/seen the side scan in action out wide.
i have been told it is only good for lakes and rivers that dont have waves and swell, because this effects the way it reads.
i have just purchased/installed the hds10 with 600w tranny and was impressed with the side scan feature you see on you tube, which can be added later.
somebody in the west must be using this already.
any feedback appreciated

don't have a lowrance have the humminbird.
the humminbird is a brilliant unit and has better resolution....
any sounder has it's pro and cons
the humminbird has a menu with three options; fresh and shallow or deep saltwater
but yeh the side imaging only works well at low speed (<10 miles) and swell is not to bad its the short chop that clouds the picture. obviously the frequency reads from the transducer out sideways so it skims the surface of the water and any turbulance will fuzz the return signal........
its all to do with the size of the frequency band as it scans sideways. just think of a long but very skinny frequency (@455kHz), instead of the cone shape of the 2-D sounder (83 or 200kHz).
also requires a considerable power supply and large capacity to read the return.
but wouldn't be without my sounder and I use mine offshore.

what humminbird are you running damo? I'm looking for one at the moment. Always used HB & looking at the 858 at a minimum.

it is shit in water over 20-25m only good in fresh or shallows dont waste your money .the only good thing i got out of it was networking my 2 hd7 units
ps have 2nd hand structure scan trans going cheap. lol

I thought the side scan was only made for shallow work like less than 24m. So besides it doesnt work out deep, whats it like in the shallows?? any good?

told me good up to 70m ,so thats why i got it . another thing is that the size of the tran creates cavatation and can not be mounted on a boat such as a cat with 2 motors as most trans on these boats are under engine hubs

the hummibird goes 50m deep and 50m wide (so 100 metres both sides).
the 2-D goes deeper

sent you a PM I've got the 798 great little unit.
had mates out on the Vic River in the NT not long back and you should have seen the pictures of the crocs on the sounder....very impressive.
humminbird have had the market for years and while you may prefer lowrance I'd wait till they refine their product........
For example I could cruise the Blackwood and scan the whole river :)

humminturds as i call them yanky lake fishing units unfortunatly the lowrance hds series shits all over them and the structure scan is good for 80m hb bombs out in 30m have used them both and lowrance wins hands down and yes you can use them on a cat just buy the thru hull transducer version and tell me how a hb which puts out 500w rms or with a bloody expensive 1kw transducer can compete with broadband sonar that pumps out the equivelent of 3.75kw rms out of a standard d/f transducer its not rocket science to see wich is better
