Lucky Bay

 Hi all

Im planning a couple of nights beach fishing up Lucky Bay south of Kalbarri at the start of November. I only have access to an AWD vehicle (mitsubishi outlander), does anyone know if I'll have problems getting to the beach? The only info I can find is that past halfway is 4x4 territory but ide be alright on dirt tracks just not soft sand.

Im not expecting to be doing much beach driving as ive been stuck too many times before

Thanks, Andy

You will get all the way to the huts and the beach at the start of the bay is ok.

I would be a bit carefull going too far as the beach will start to get alot softer that time of year.

mmmmm

mmmmmm interesting comments. as i do sandboarding tours down there all the time i do get to see some interesting 4wding from people!!! 2wd in the cruiser mmmm not at lucky mate. there are areas there that are like quick sand. as choc said this time of year and especially after the large swells we had down that way the sand has dried and is like quick sand in places.

let your tires down to 15 psi and that will cover you if you get into soft sand. if you got a manual use 2 and 3rd only if auto drive or 2nd. if you stay on the main track from halfway all the way into lucky your right but once you get off the main track into untracked beach be careful. dont flog ya vehicle.

i do get entertainment from seeing people get bogged down and then rev the crap outa their 4wds. the customers in the bus enjoy a laugh as i give running commentary!!

if i see you bogged ill snatch ya out for $50 hehe!! be careful go slow and stay on the high line. dont go low unless you really have to!

Tangles is on the money

Ive been doing that stretch for a long long time and sand can get soft on beach area due to swells etc.

Invest in a snatch strap/shovel/exhaust jack . Most people are happy to snatch you out if you have your own strap, alot less so if you are relying on using other peoples equipment.

You can do alot of beach in 2wd with hard tyres but its better to drop tyre pressure and put it in 4wd (or in your case Blue , what tangles suggested).Saves flogging your car. I have Cruiser TD and prefer not to leave the beach all chopped up for others to get bogged / leaving tracks leading in and out rutted so it bounces the crap out of you.

Very Soft at times

Definitely not a awd job, tried the old Subaru outback up there and it was no go however, park at the huts and walks to the beach, or in my case hop in a mates Patrol!

As others have said the beaches can get very soft and an AWD will not cope in many areas, however there are tracks which are firmer running out the back of the shacks and parallel to the beach for some distance. All the beaches to the south of Lucky are very fishy and there are always deep guttry holes scattered around which can be accessible at certain times with an AWD. I prefer the beaches than the bay itself but thats perhaps just me.

The bay will most likely be off limits to an AWD and certainly the far side theres a fair bit of saft dune driving to do, late Autumn the dune was nice going Northwards but a stiff incline on the retrurn trip.

Another alternative is going in via the quad-fisher-dune buggy area at Wagoe?? You will need to use the place as accommodation to get access to the track but just a thought.

I called the campsite and they dont hire out their quads, tours only. That would have been great as its 1.5k to the beach from the campsite. Ive managed to get hold of a prado now so happy days! Everywhere seemed to be sold out online but called round and managed to get one.

Thanks everyone for the advice
