Lucky bay near Kalbarri

 Hi guys

me and my son and a few mates heading up to lucky bay the week before Easter. Never fished there before, we will be in a boat. I'm taking up a 18 foot carribean Concorde just wondering if the off shore fishing is good and would it be easy to tow in.

any reply would help heaps thanks

I'm half thinking about heading there that week as well. But I'll be landbased only. Maybe see you there! Can't help with your query though...

be interested to see how you go launching an 18ft carribian there.

If in the bay itself, from memory there is only a small gap in the reef to get out through.

You'd be brave!

Went there twice last year once in August and again in October, sand is quite soft. Dug out quite a few tourists haha. If you let your tyres down you'll do it easy (in the car) ! Towing a boat will be another story. I think you will struggle with a boat that size but if you've got all the gear to save yourself and a capable tow vehicle then why not have a crack. I'd imagine the off shore fishing would be superb

Saw something on facebook the the other day that the ranger won't let you camp near the beach unless you have a chemical toilet? Might be something to just double check...

save yourself the misery of trying unless you have a solid tow vehicle (even then you will struggle, especially if its a glass hull) launch from port Gregory and head north. gap will be fine to navigate in that size boat and with the fishing side stay in close and troll lures and skirts unless you want to commit to a long steam out wide. mullet fillets do the damage while bottom bashing or left over tailor fillets from evening beach sessions. hope this helps

I've retrieved a UB 590 there

Boats of that size launch there quite commonly, although it is good to have a second vehicle handy if you have trouble on the retrieve. There is a bit of a point where the beach usually flattens out a bit, it varies.

Entrance is not large, but no issues apart from a strong current which is always running out.The ridge is just out a bit, about 100 metres off the rocks; this runs continuously either way from down at Shoal Pt , up to the top end of Wagoe. Just troll up and down it for mackerel--if there are any about they will be close to the bay. For offshore, I can't really help with any marks--I didn't really crayfish offshore down that far much, as you just tended to run into the Gregory boats when you did.  Fishing can be good out there, but , from my limited recollection, you'd need to be 8 miles out or more? Glad to be corrected. And you can also pick up snapper along the outside edge of that inshore ridge.

On its day you might be right but I have launched lighter aluminium boats there many times and sometimes the sand there is like quicksand especially if there has been a bit of swell and you need to be well prepared and quick to get in and out, drop down wheel helps a lot plus a second vehicle for backup
the track on the way is before you get onto the beach can be very soft also, and bash the boat around a bit, not great for glass boats
Port Gregory is slightly better be wary of sand if there is swell once again but it seems to be very shallow there over the last 12 months as the bay has been filling in for years so your car may get very wet backing out far enough to get enough water under the hull

Maybe for that size boat the Kalbarri ramps might be a better option, put some extra fuel in and drive down, the run along the southern cliffs to bluff point is pretty spectacular and puts you onto some good ground at the north end of Wagoe for pelagics and bottom fish

Lucky Bay Camping

Thu, 2017-02-09 15:57

Guys, This is a copy of the rules that now apply to Lucky Bay, it will cost you $15/night/vehicle to camp at Lucky Bay, collected by the Ranger. Advisable to take a portable toilet and use the waste disposal facilities that are now provided. As previous posts have stated you can launch a boat that size at the Bay but I also would advise launching the boat at either Port Gregory and Kalbarri and mooring in the Bay.
