Lures to Just Catch Fish

I'm fairly new to fishing as a whole and have always used bait until recently I decided to start trying lures. I've bought a few different kinds for different things such as some twistys for herring, silver hard metal and white soft plastic for salmon, a few others for other particular ones and made some by embedding hooks inside some soft plastics that didn't have any. However I still haven't caught any fish on a lure yet at all (I'm moving it about trying to imitate prawns and distressed fish, not just winding in). I know there is no definitive answer particularly, but if I was to get a lure that I could just walk out to a jetty over the ocean, throw in and catch a fish (herring, silver bream, butterfish, anything), would anybody have any suggestions? Attached is also my collection so far of lures in case I have any in there that should definitely be catching fish but I just don't know how to use.

Thanks

James

Hey mate. Ditch those long

Hey mate. Ditch those long shank hooks and rig up your plastics with a jig head hooks and the lighter you can get away with in the wind/current the better. I like the TT headlockz.

My go to lure is the Ecogear SX40 and I use it to catch black bream, tarwine, herring, yellowfin whiting, flathead and flounder and have even caught a decent size salmon on it.

I've also found a better catch rate with a good quality FC leader like Yamatoya when compared to Black Magic and I use 2lb leader on the whiting which helps the catch rate but I go 6-8lb around broken ground and snag country.

Thanks Jack. I'll have to

Thanks Jack. I'll have to invest in some jig head hooks then. I keep hearing about the ecogear, I'll have to pick one up I think. Any particular preferred colour? I've heard 309 has the best all around results? Sad to hear about black magic, my favourite leader when I'm poor and can't afford the Savage Gear leaders I like.

SX40 in 303 is the one I buy

Mon, 2017-11-13 22:42

SX40 in 303 is the one I buy pretty much everytime and the whiting and bream love them. For the whiting I remove the trebles and tie a couple of assist hooks on the back. Big John on here sells very affordable custom made bucktail jigs that are a must have for fishing the broken ground in the Swan for flatties and flounder.

Some days the fish just won't take a lure so don't be disheartened and take a bit of bait as backup if you're keen to take home a fish.

where you are as to what lure to use.

and 70 percent of my lure sessions end in no fish its  just the way it goes.

i reccomend  buying a rapala long cast stick bait  get some 20lb fluro carbon leader find a beach with some reef breaks and holes and just walk up and down in just before sunset or bit after sunrise casting it over and over again at the holes in the reef.

if you want herring etc go to any local mariner cast small vibes or metals at structure and you should pick em up they are always there burley can help also.

White Richter Plug

Small Richter plugs are a great, simple, long casting lure that catch everything from herring to tailor to sailfish, they are pretty awesome and last forever and are very well priced
