Lures on Metro Beaches

If i was to take my 15-25g pilchard and halco lures to a metro beach, which beach would be most ideal to use them?

Maybe Triggs?

I'm quite new to lure fishing but ive just put my daiwa regal za 4000 reel on a graphite shimano rod with 20lb braid, so im super keen to get out there and cast over those breakers!

Any advice on techniques would be most welcomed, thanks!

Metals!

Thu, 2009-06-11 16:02

The first time I tried using a large metal off the beach (a 55 gram Krocodile from the US) I got an 8 kilo mulloway at Singleton. It almost goes without saying that probably several thousand casts since and there hasn't been another one! Have been quite a few tailor though.

Best advice I can give is aim for the couple hours leading up to high tide...maximum amount of water in the gutters, maximum numbers of predatory (lure eating) fish looking for a feed!

NEW!

Tue, 2009-09-15 09:07

Being new to WA, it is good to see some land based guys throwing some gear around! I was wondering if anyone could help me with some info about targeting Flathead from the shore? I was really enjoying it in North Queensland and was hoping to continue the fun here in WA; however, am a bit unsure if the beaches hold them? Any info would be great.

Thanks

You can get them here, but

You can get them here, but they dont seem to be as prolific as overeast and certainly not as large (a 45cm one would be pretty decent). I've caught one in shallow waters a few 100m off the beach, and seen one caught while baitfish for herring/tailor, but they're not a commonly targetted species.

Better off on the in the estuarys. The WA flatties are bar tails so 50cm is a monster. blowies will murder SPs so HBs are the way to go. Any ambush points drop offs, rocks weed beds, bridges all worth a cast.

Sounds tops mate. I have noticed a lot of those blow fish around actually. I will definately give the esturies a try. Its pretty amazing when you think it is the same country, yet so different from coast to coast, river to river! Thanks for the tip mate.

ive just recently come back

Sat, 2009-09-26 14:15

ive just recently come back to WA from QLD and let me tell you the fishing is completly differant. the beaches here arnt like the ones in QLD because off the tidal influence. the sand is very hard, unlike the almost muddy beaches over there. The flatties like to beery in the soft sand/mud and ambush baitfish so the terain doesnt suit flathead. just before i moved back i found some really good spots to target flatthead and learnt alot about there feeding habbits and wot lures work best. the best session i had over there was awsome, catching 23 flatties in 4 hours just from the shore all on plastics........ The best spots to try over here would be in the swan around any shallow flats, if u can get away from those plastic destroying blowies. plastics in the 3-6 inch range work very well, and ive found the power baits are the way too go, but if the blowies are thick ull be changing your plastic after every cast so its better to use the hard bodies. having said that the flatties over here are very aggresive and will hit just about anything.

Places like Pinaroo Point hold a fair few flathead

Mon, 2009-10-05 09:46

And I have caught some pretty reasonable ones on my home made surf poppers at Triggs and Floreat.

Flathead

Wed, 2009-10-21 14:46

Hi,

I've stayed in Perth as well as in Brisbane. And they are both totally different. Both have their plus points. Tailor in Perth Trevally in Brissy. Didn't have enough time in both places!!!

In Perth, I remember Point Walter sand bar and the surrounding areas as better for flathead. You can wade there and at low tide you can see the diamond shaped pits the flat head sit in while waiting for water to run over the bar.

Little pink scorpions worked for me. I removed both trevbles and replaced it with a 1/0 stinger hook - minimises the blowies getting hooked. If fly fishing your clouser eventually becomes a charlie and your plastics get their tails nipped off too.

Hope this helps.

Coming back down under this year just for a trip headed north up WA.
