I did it. I finally caught one of these legendary fish that I can cross off my list. May not be that massive ones you hear the morning after but I got a sized one at 62cm and didn't camp a night for one.
Caught on a live trumpet that I had jagged just like the legends foretold that it would.
I'm a happy fisherman having struggled weeks to catch anything at all. Caught in busselton ;)

i used to find the live trumpies were dynamite when chasing in the bunno shipping channel . Nothing better than hearing the big boys grunting as they came down the channel then the commotion from everyone as reels started screaming. That was 20 year ago now, do they still have a good March run in the harbour?

I'm not sure if they have big runs in March as I am still new to Bunbury/busselton. I hooked a big one 2 days ago on another live trumpet but lost it at the rocks. It spat the hooks at the very last second. The trumpets are dynamite bait and was just trying to look up how to catch more trmpets. I cast the trumpet out prolly for 10 mins and thought i was snagged when i picked up my rod. Tightened the drag a fair bit and then suddenly reel screamed for a few times. Unfortunately dropped the big one just as i tried to pull him up.

There is a theory around mulloway hit the live trumpeter to kill them rather than actually eat them.cuold be true seems to work

Just fished a slopey spot in
Just fished a slopey spot in the Swan, live Trumpeter on a running rig, snelled hooks. Slight movement, and I retrieved the bait to find it was just a head left. Trying to work out what it was, Mullo or crab raiders ? Have had a good number of runs on live Trumpeters in the past. As for the Murderous Mullo theory, could have something to do with the croaking that Trumpeters make - perhaps the Mulloway don't like small fry's imitating their croak ! :P

i always thought it was because when you put the hook through them they grunt a lot more and under water that would scream injured or distressed fish = easier feed for mullla
ahkarboy - asking around for a deckie spot and giving it a crack would be worth it for sure . We used to just park out there in a tinny. Keep us up to date on how you go!
