Jurien? If you want to catch

Mon, 2010-03-08 15:25

Jurien? If you want to catch these up there, then be prepared to do a lot of miles in a  boat.

They like super deep water, although you may very occasionally catch them in shallower, and unless there is an aggregator like a FAD, you just have to chance them somewhere.

id say keep driving about

Mon, 2010-03-08 16:08

id say keep driving about another 11 hours would be your safest bet, then troll out near the rigs or at the 100 m contour at coral bay - apart from that, i would suggest changing target species if you are only hitting jurien

There are dollies there, but

There are dollies there, but its a matter of being able to find them, and thats not an easy part. Good idea to have a rod rigged up with a metal in case you do see a school of them (or tuna more likely).

no chance of getting them on

Mon, 2010-03-08 16:27

no chance of getting them on a bottom rig unless there is some form of FAD around to hold them, then a floating live-bait or whole / cube of bait-fish.

Out that way I'd say you going to have to troll, troll and troll some more,
best colours are orange and purple lures, small squid type and feathers work well. Also soft-plastics trolled have given good results, but be prepared to troll a full day and a good chance of coming in with none!
Just my experiences,

I guess you got the hint

Mon, 2010-03-08 19:39

I guess you got the hint now. The problem with dolphinfish is that, unless you have a fad to aggregate them, they are just bycatch or an opportunistic target.

You don't catch them on the bottom almost ever, try the top 5m of200m.

Can get 'em there...

Mon, 2010-03-08 21:03

...sometimes hanging around cray floats on the second bank (around 12-15 nautical miles), but most likely you'll have to go 25nm plus to be in with a real chance, and even then you'll probably have to hope there are some cray pots still out that far. Investigate any floating object, and the deeper you are the better.

umm jurien/ cervantes is the nearest to the continental shelf in the c zone or the west coast bioregion, 16nm

so no you wont have to travel far.

This time of the year theyll show up in as close as the first bank but mostly on the second bank in the 90's to 100's plus

Find the cray pot lines an troll along them
