Unscrew it and put a drop of the oil they provide in the box down there from time to time. It will still need a full service from time to time but it's a neat little aspect to keep the main shaft lubricated.

totally! sun cream!

after a friends twinpower went swimming it began running rough as hell. We were over seas out on the flat with nothing for lube. Then some bush mechanics kicked in and we squeezed a few drops of banana boat into her and after 3 more days of hard fishing it was purring like a kitten, and still is.

I say that because I do know someone who has done the same and swears by the results, I thought he was taking the micky - He definently wasn't. I don't know if he has ever had a full service done on his reels though after using the cream, would be interesting to hear of the results if he did.

Sunscreen

Mon, 2011-02-21 21:31

I do know of someone whose dive hooker compressor dropped all its oil when it tipped over. With a week left of there holiday and no other oil they filled it with sunscreen. It ran for the rest of the trip but when I stripped it down after it was totally destroyed inside.

Maintenance port

Fri, 2011-02-25 20:33

These were designed for temporary maintenance by squeezing a couple of drops of the oil provided in the box. It temporary only. You should be squeezing grease into it as inside the whole is the pinion, worm drive gear and part of the main drive gear. Been all toothed gears, you should grease them rather than oil. Too much oil will thin out the grease and eventually the reel will run rough.

The maintenance port is an

The maintenance port is an easily accessed hole strategically located for easy maintenance of the reel.

Using a slot-head screwdriver, the rubber-sealed plug can be removed from the reel.

Here one drop of lightweight oil or grease can be inserted into the drive train to prevent corrosion and protect the smooth retrieve of the reel.

Be sure not to over-lubricate the reel as excessive lubrication can cause the reel to become sluggish.

Also, the use of after market spray lubricants contain cleaners and degreasers that can actually remove the grease and  oil that protect the reel and cause premature corrosion or damage to the reel.
