Mandurah whiting session

Hey everyone first report here,

With the weather warming up i decided to try the Mandurah flats today for the first time since last summer. Got down there about 9:30 and although the sun was out and a light easterly blowing the YFW where initially very hard to find! I managed to spot a few schools and although they were happy to follow my surface lures they were very reluctant to hit them. They started to get a little more active about 11 but they were constantly spitting the hooks. Only managed 4 YFW between 9:30 and 2:45. Im not sure what turned them on but from 2:45ish - 3:15 they absolutely fired and my 4 biggest for the day came in 4 casts. Ended up with 9 for the day with the biggest going 32cm and a new PB. I had well over 20 whiting spit the hooks throughout the day!

The only lure they would take all day was a bassday sugarpen in a prawn pattern (MB16) worked really slow. I tried skinny pop jrs in clear and duo pocopoco's in clear with pink head but they werent interested.

Cheers.

Yeah, I went down and gave it bit of a shot first time today. Sounds like you had the same day as us, found em but were either shy to strike or missed hook ups and that busy period in the arvo. Just needed to find the right lure and retrieve.that worked and you did well mate. Cant wait to give it another shot when theyre fired up and nail some of those bigger models

Flats

Mon, 2014-11-10 11:47

Hey mate i wade the flats in the little bay where the Serpentine enters the inlet. There are guys here that anchor their tinnny on the hard to reach flats and wade from there aswell and they seem to do pretty well but i have no idea where they go. The whiting fire up when the water warms up so sunday was good because of the warm weather and wind stayed easterly most of the day... if the seabreeze comes in early it can chill the flats pretty quick this time of year.

Yer tim-o sounds like the exact same day... there were plenty around but they just werent interested.

Solunar charts

Mon, 2014-11-10 12:56

Yer ill always check the solunar charts before i go fishing and have always found them to be relatively accurate.

Funny though the one i checked for Sunday had the peak period from about 12:40 - 2:40... possibly due to tide time difference between Mandurah and Freo?

Sure mate always happy to fish with others. I havent seen any herring on the flats i fish before but the mullet were in plague proportion busting up all over the place anytime a bird flew over! I think i fowl hooked a few because the runs were hard and fast and would just bust off.

Cheers.

Good to hear

Tue, 2014-11-11 11:35

Last year tried Point Grey (via Boat) and Wannanup flats. Hard to beat my first yellowfin though ever on lure -34cm. But wont stop me trying.

Recently realised the difference between SW and Shark Bay. Some off the ones up there makes a 34cm look small, but wouldnt take lures keenly. Still caught them on artificials - Gulp Red bloodworms.

I suspect the popper/lure down here is because of the prawns swimming and jumping in the Estaury.

34cm is a nice YFW! The 2

Tue, 2014-11-11 15:38

34cm is a nice YFW! The 2 biggest in the picture were very fat for 32cm.

Im heading up to exy in April so hoping to get into a few in the gulf on poppers and stickbaits if i can find them.

Yep dead right with the prawn immitation... The bassday sugarpens look exactly like a prawn skipping on the surface.

Going to be hard to beat as a PB down here in the Estuary. But was easily beaten around Monkey Mia. 4 large YFW was more than enough for a great feed for the 2 off us. Yum. Didnt measure them but would in my opinion have sctrached 40cm easily, and fat as a mafia's pig.

We hit the Mandurah early

Thu, 2014-11-13 06:36

We hit the Mandurah early sunday morning for some whiting. The fishing was really slow in the morning while it was cold but we found that slowly rolling a deep diver bream lure up the banks onto the flats was catching a few.

When it warmed up the whiting fired up for us but the same for us they would only take the Sugarpen in clear colors. We boated about 25 fish before lunch and dropped heaps more.

It was my first crack at them on lures so my mate outfished me easily. We found rod tip nice and low to the water and really quick flicking of the wrist to get the lure doing a real jittery walk the dog with a slow retrieve wroked the best for us.

Our biggest for the morning was 35cm and most average around 30cm. We also caught about 6 yellow eye on the lures.
