Hi im in need of a marine electrician too. My boat stays in the water down at Coogee, and I only got about 9 months life out of the anode on my leg, before it was stuffed. So im guessing ive got some loose current going on, causing electolysis. Anyone know how I fix this..Any help appreciated..

suggest you try this get yourself a d/c tong tester turn of all your appliances onboard (don't forget turn of your bilge pump)then tong the load side of you battery system , if you have a load showing on the tong tester you have a leakage problem (if you don't you have an anode problem) if there is a load showing go to your distribution /fuse board and switch of each circuit breaker or remove each fuse one at a time check the tong tester each time if you see a drop in amps/load you then know you have a problem on that circuit eg a wiring problem with wiring on that circuit or the appliance on that circuit go through them one at a time and you will find the problem

If you are isolating your batteries all the time then look at the wiring to your bilge pump/float switch maybe. Those joiners are usually a bit sus.
Having said that your anode is doing exactly what it should unless there is corrosion appearing on the leg itself?

You've got no details of your setup here but squinting at your tiny avatar it looks like an outboard-if it is tilted out of the water then the anode shouldn't dissolve?

This sort of problem can also come from being NEXT to a boat with a problem, or even a steel boat without a problem.

Years ago I remember the Fisheries patrol boats anodes vanishing twice as fast on the side facing an old adjacent steel boat.

good old electrolysis

Mon, 2013-07-15 19:21

are all your dissimaler metals that come into contact with water bonded toghether and then back to your anode ? boat ally or glass  looks like glass in your pic ,you can try un plugging anything on the boat that has a standby mode then then check for any current flow from your battery . really but if your going trough anodes that quick i would say you or a boat near you has a big problem ,you really need to have it tested with the right meters to really find it properly ,  i havnt worked on boats in a few years so dont have the gear anymore to test it properly , you could try cullys marine technologies in henderson or arrow electric it freo to check it out

Hey guys thanks heaps for your comments, I am starting to understand electrolysis a bit better. Sorry for late reply too, I am away at work and my laptop blew up.

Boat is not the one in my photo, I have sold and bought another. Boat is a 32 Chivers with a Volvo diesel on a leg. My main problem will be finding some tongs that I can borrow to chase it down, wold like to prove its not my boat.

Cheers scottnofish, might try those guys to see if they can help.

Thanks again

what you can also do to see if

Mon, 2013-07-22 06:48

everything on your boat is protected is get an anologe millivolt meter and connect one leg to your anode and the other to every metal part touching water you shouldnt read any voltage betwwen parts if they are bonded and protected ,if your reading a voltage between them then you have a problem
