Marine Parks and restricted fishing areas in WA - a reference list.
Marine Parks and restricted fishing areas in WA - a reference list.
A question which comes up regularly, is "where can I get an overview, or a complete list, or an area list, of the Marine Parks, no fishing areas, etc in WA.??
The answer is:- this "big picture/big list" doesn't exist in any usable form that I have been able to find on a website anywhere.
So I have made up a page on the Recfishwest website "Marine Parks and restricted fishing areas in Western Australia - a reference list" http://www.recfishwest.org.au/MarineParks.htm
I originally intended to have diagrams and maps, starting with overviews and getting progressively more detailed, but most maps, zones, etc are only available in PDF files, not web images I could link to.
I have contacted DEC and hope to get a WA State overview map to use.
Many maps and zoning images are quite large and detailed. I could extract these into images for the RFW webpage, but that would complicate the maintenance and update of the page and introduce copyright issues.
It's better if people go to the "official" information sources as listed.
The page is still a "work in progress"
Any suggestions, comments, corrections or additions, please?

Google Earth
Perhaps adding a link to each of those pages to point marks on Google Earth would help with map referencing.
A lot of people use that for fishing location investigation so perhaps that would benefit quite a few people.
I'm pretty sure you can put links into the Google Earth annotations.
Just an idea.

It could be done but I dont
It could be done but I dont think it should be left to Terry. It should be left to people who are paid well to do these things.

There are a lot of maps and
There are a lot of maps and a lot of boundaries and lots of zones. Most of the maps and images are in pdf files which can't be edited.
Adding Google Earth references and then maintaining and updating them could be a big job.
DEC or Fisheries have the originals and any changes or additions should be carried out by the Department responsible.
Otherwise people could be working from one of two different maps - the "official" one, or another one produced by someone else.
Just imagine if there were any disagreements about some interpretation of some boundary, and someone was going to get prosecuted!! Not going there.
Use the "official" maps. If these aren't suitable, ask the Department for better.

Seems SA Government have now done this
Just read the Recfishwest casting around the internet and saw a link to this...
As I had suspected Google Earth has the capability to allow download to your GPS so you have better and more accurate idea of where the sanctuary or no-fishing zones are located. Good on the SA govt's initiative, perhaps our Govt should do the same.

Your comments are exactly the reason I put that link in.
