Marine ply
Submitted by mattycutters on Mon, 2014-07-28 19:27
Hi I'm chasing some marine ply to make a flat platform in my dingy the sizes are
580x950
and 720 one end 950 the other end and it's by 730 sort of a v shape.
Another question what glue should I use? And also should I put marine carpet ontop of it?

2440x1220x12mm AA grade
2440x1220x12mm AA grade marine ply costs $80 a sheet from bunnings. No doubt you can get it cheaper but bunnings is convenient for a one off small piece.
I like short pile artificial lawn instead of carpet. No slip, hooks don't get caught in it, drains & dries fast as well as being cheap.
I just used silicone to stick my lawn to the ply but you don't say what you want to use the glue for so may need something different.

If you are going to stick
If you are going to stick carpet on it, use structural ply. It uses the same glue I believe, just has a different surface (May have knots in it)

No need to get that carried
No need to get that carried away, a few coats of Bondall Monocel Gold (also from bunnings) will seal the wood nicely. You could get away with 3 coats but I used 5 coats when I did mine. I sold the boat to a mate 3 years ago & the floor is still as good as the day I put it in. Allow the varnish to fully cure & scuff it up lightly before applying adhesive for the lawn/carpet.

Yes
You definately need marine ply, as standard structural ply will delaminate in no time at all if it gets wet / stays damp for any period of time. Bunnings has this, and it doesn't matter if it has knots in it as you're covering it with carpet. If it was mine, I would also seal the cut edges with a lacquer or oil based sealer for extra protection.
You need to use contact adhesive to stick your carpet down, also available at bunnings, near the silicones, etc in the paint section at bunnings. Get a tub AND a aerosol can of contact adhesive. Use the aplicator and the tub on the ply, and spray the carpet. Leave for half hour before you press them together.
Bingo.

Apologies, you can use
Apologies, you can use Exterior grade as it uses the same glues, though marine grade must not have any knots in it where exterior grade allows it.
You do not need to coat it with Fiberglass, though applying Polyester resin (cheaper than epoxy) will seal and protect the timber.
Just glue (Bear glue) the carpet ontop of the timber and you will be fine.
