Cheers Dale, with that 16000 how hard would you go with it, would you target big sambo's for example? I'm looking for a tough option to the over priced Shim Stella!
getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.
On a Fishing WA sambo tagging trip several years ago - both were brand new - factually the EB80 not only outperformed the Penn which gave up the ghost after the second 25kg sambo it encountered - this was witnessed by bth Mike Constantine and Ian Staggles indeed Stages was using a Penn himself so pehapps it was just a bad one
The EB80 is still going strong five yes 5 years later - the Penn shot it's main gear in less that half a day - I actually have a coupe of Penn rods which I really like so there is no "brand"prejudice but the reels - sorry but they are no where near as strong, smooth nor reliable
Only thing to fail on the Okuma's ( I have two and a new Salina which I really like) was the handles and they were replaced without question plus a spare three years into hard use
Hello Joodles, sorry for taking so long to get back, I have 300yards of 50lb Berkley Whiplash of the line on the reel and use an Ugly Stick, Blue water 24kg rod and it pulls the sambo's up easily. The reel gets smoother each time I use it it, so I like it even more.
Hi Nick, How is the felt drag holding up after the heavy work. I have had a Salina ii 16000 for a while that has only landed one big shark in limited use on the water. The reel did an awesome job but the felt drag has me wondering how long it would remain smooth.
I have been told Okuma has carbon drags in the pipeline.
That is perhaps the key thing I like in the Okuma's - the silkiness of the drag - have caught sails and huge mackies around the Dampier area as well as bottom bouncing in the metro - either way the reels have far far exceeded my expectations.
Note well however that I do have them serviced by Anglers Anon in Canning Vale every year but given the punishment they have been put through they remain awesome. The Salina is a recent addition (perhaps 6 months) and it's first fish out of the box was a 17kg metro Dhu from not that far off Garden Island and it was flawless straight out of the box on a fish I called for a big sambo due to the brilliant fight it put up.
I am generally very conservative when it comes to praising a product but not a single bad word to say about the Okuma's - mind you I did give away my Okuma overhead - that bloody ratchet sent me spare not being able to turn it off.
Oh and if anyone knows where I can get some more Norcast braid in 30lb can they let me know, best I have ver used, used to get it by mail order from the tackle shop in the centre of Darwin but they cant source it any longer.

I haven't seen it, but being an Okuma fisho myself, I'd guess it was the Salina II 16000, I have one of those and like it a lot. Good value for money.
Cheers

Put an Okuma directly against a Penn 950
