Dual battery solar

I use a Victron BlueSolar PWM DUO which is a dual battery solar regulator which are about $85.

Wired it up with a pair of alligator clips for Batt1 and Batt2 to a 40w panel which puts out 2.2A in full sun, then tapers off to a trickle charge when the batteries are full.

Its the best way I could see with a single panel otherwise the batteries will always be in parallel, which as sunshine says can lead to other issues.

Is the other battery a house battery?

If you have one dedicated starting battery and one house battery, the best simple method is to have the solar charging the start battery and keep them isolated.  Next step up would be a proper DC-DC charger that can be set up to prioritise charging the start battery, then only charge the house battery once the start battery is full.
