Maxwell Anchormax Capstan
Submitted by Goin_Fushin. on Mon, 2015-01-05 21:24
Has anybody got or used a Maxwell Anchormax capstan? I can't find any honest reviews anywhere apart from the suppliers.
I am looking to use it to haul the anchor. I know that hauling chain is not recommended but I think I have a solution for that.
Anyway I don't have room in the anchor well for a drum nor the depth for a vertical or horizontal windlass.
I currently use a anchor retriever (the one with the float) but it is hard to use when anchoring between and near reef.
Any other suggestions (apart from toughen up etc.) Makes/Models would be greatly appreciated.

winch
Have you looked at the lewmar profish?
Not sure off your set up but you may be able to mount it in front of the well?
If you don't have room for a vertical system then I am not sure how a Maxwell capstan will work for you? Unless you are thinking of installing it in the side gunwhale and pull your anchor that way. It could work but you will need to maintain some tension on your rope to start it off- and then you have your chain issue?
Good luck

Got one on the side gunwale
Got one on the side gunwale on my boat. Great as a pot winch but no good as an anchor winch. Tried a couple of times but pulls boat so it is side on, the rope has to be manually fed back to the anchor well and you can't pull the chain on it (found that out the hard way). Currently saving coin for one up the front

Thanks Guys. I was looking
Thanks Guys. I was looking at installing it next to the tie off point just behind my anchor well. My biggest problem is that my anchor well is only 400mm deep. Filled with rope there is 100mm clearance to the top.
All of the winches I have looked at including the profish require 300-400mm freefall below the winch to the rope pile. This appears to be essential to prevent tangles when deploying the anchor (according to manufactures and other forums), especially on the free fall. If I used the anchormax I realise that I would have to maintain tension on the tail and maunally feed it into the well.

Have you got full chain on
Have you got full chain on that, or chain / rope. If you have full chain, what size boat / what size chain and length, did you go with? I would be concerned it would have too much impact on the trim (which is already bow down a bit on my tub)

Rope and Chain
I have 6 to 8 metres of chain and then 100 meters of rope. asked about all chain and the shop said the same as you would have to muh impact on ride.
6 mm chain 12 mm rope, makes moving spots a breeze especially if solo.

I've got 6 metres of chain
I've got 6 metres of chain (6mm) and 80m of rope on a 5m plate Ali CC.
What "drop" distance did you get with the addition of the bridge. Looking at your bridge height I guess you have gained about 100mm. This would give me 200mm drop. Not sure if this is still enough to maintain a tangle free freefall. Might be ok for a power out winch?

Issue is on retrieve
The drop is mainly for the retrieve I think as if the rope does not fall enough it tangles back in the winch.
