Mayday off Northern Suburbs

Received a call about 8.00pm advising Mayday had been recieved at Water Police Base of the northern suburbs. headed to Hillarys to man one of the boats. Ended up crewing on the new police bo0at. Our vessel stayed in Hillarys as backup

Last known position of EPIRB was at Alkimos reef. Man was found by our volunteers in cars on the beach near Pippidinny safe and well. Yacht lost as well as his dog.

Not sure why he was out there in this will probably know more tomorrow.

Conditions were shit with 50kn squalls and 5-6 mtr seas. Had a couple of close calls but home safe now.

This guy needs to be in Graylands for assessment.

Wtf! That is a retarded area to be in those conditions. There is reef everywhere and you have to be on your game in a 3m swell during the day let alone at night in 5-6m seas!

Good to here there was a happy ending

Police Boat

Wed, 2013-07-17 09:04

Police boat was excellent. First real test and the crew form the Water Police were brilliant. We were onboard to assist with the search and also guide them through all the reef and shallow areas to try and avoid the worst of the condition.

Mind you we had some close calls being hit by a couple of big waves on the way up. Going to ask our treasurer for a bigger boat

Local Knowledge

Wed, 2013-07-17 09:41

A lot of it is local knowledge. I have been fishing these water for over 30 years and 22 years in sea rescue. Still we had to plan ahead to determine the best path to take.

Worst conditions I have been out in at night. Could not see the ocean and had to basically feel our way through the seas. Only knew of larger waves when they hit us. Visability was nil.

Left Mangles Bay yesterday Afternoon. Sitting in there in the flat water, it would have been a nice southerly at your back but surely , by the Coathanger you would have a fair old idea that the breeze is pushing 35 knots and the swell is at 5m.

This bloke should have turned into Fremantle, or Hillaries or Mindarie, or taken up box folding in a warehouse.

Please dont think that this bloke is a normal yachtie. Most of us take responsability for our actions.

Congrats to you and your blokes for heading out in what would have been rotten conditions to look for some stupid bastard who has no concern for those who have to risk their lives to save them when things go pear shaped.

As the acronym goes for YACHT is ......Yet Another C2nt Having Trouble . and from what I have seen them do over the years nothing will change my impression of them either.

Big difference between racing

Thu, 2013-07-18 13:14

Big difference between racing yachties and cruisers.

Racing yachties need to be able to get themselves out of shit where cruisers can do what they want, when they want.

Then on the other hand, there are these round the world record breakers, who in the launching ceremony, take the motor out to save weight.

The people who do this sort of thing need to be fined for the costs involved in rescuing them. No cost can be put on the people who have to put their life on the line to rescue fools and idiots. . To all those people involved in the rescue go a vote of thanks for the work they do to keep us boaties safe.
No one should have been put in a position whereby their life was at risk to save some one from a situation that was entirely avoidable. Bloody shame about the dog.
Whilst looking at this event I've just read that 2 more SIEV's have sunk and the Border Patrol Command and the RAN have had to race around put lifes at risk and rescue more fools and criminals from their own stupid actions.

100 miles out

Wed, 2013-07-17 19:59

Going back about 2 years, we received a call that a yacht was in trouble 1nm from Carnarvons Teggs channel in shit conditions. After we towed him in we found out that there was nothing wrong with his engine or sails and all he wanted was a tow in.

This same bloke was told to leave Carnarvon boat harbour because he didn't have the necessary insurance cover to stay alongside the wharf, 2 days later he sets off his epirb a 100 nm out to sea because he's in trouble. A freighter stopped to rescue him and he asked to be towed to Fremantle, when this request was refused and the only other option was to go aboard the ship he again refused because he couldn't take his dog. After much discussion between water police and Aussar and the ships captain the dog was allowed to come aboard and the yacht abandoned.

Now here his pops up again in another yacht and still no brains

Gods gift to boating

Thu, 2013-07-18 13:39

Yachties think they are Gods gift to boating and everyone else is there only to serve them.
The amount of call outs we have had to tow them in because they cannot read nav markers, Gps screens or recognise what shallow water looks like.

One of our recent ones turned out of the main channel to head in to the Fascine some 100 metres before the actual channel, disregarding the channel being clearly marked. His reason being........Fremantle Yacht Club told me to turn as soon as I passed the second starboard marker in Teggs channel, I mean DDDUUUHHH, you could see waves breaking on the bank but that didn't stop him even though he could see the markers well ahead.

Thats like me saying that All people in Carnarvon have no idea what they are talking about. That may be backed up by you talking about Fremantle Yacht Club which is actually Fremantle Sailing Club.

It certainly isnt nice to judge a group of people due to a few moorons.

moo-rons :-)

you've coined a new phrase Swompa, Moo-rons!
It certainly isn't good to generalize but FSC/Freo fishing boat harbour can be a doozy at times, when the odd hero tries to show how he can sail out (or in) the FSC, going straight across the traffic separation zone, yelling to enforce his ROW when you can see his exhaust put-putting at the stern.

Thu, 2013-07-18 19:54

Would be better still if they had all the facts BEFORE giving out information that isn't correct. We have no idea that yachts are on their way in until we get a call saying they are bogged and can you please help us.

We have had run ins with Freo Sailing club on the last couple of Fremantle to Carnarvon yacht races where meeting were held here to work out coverage and recovery of boats out the front and it all turned to shit when a certain person decided to change it to suit themselves, since then , no more assistance from Carnarvon Sea Rescue and an apology from the local yacht club.

I raced up there during the 2002 Splash, found the entry to the fishing boat harbour to the south fairly straight forward, all be it shallow. If I recall, the charts and instructions were drawn up by your good selves, hence no dramas.

Fascine entrance

Thu, 2013-07-18 21:01

Since then you will find the entrance in to the Fascine has change some what, to the point that a dredge is clearing it out now before starting inside the main harbour then being replace by a bigger one to do Teggs channel.

The sanding up of the channel had gone eastwards to the point that it was easier to run east of the south cardinal mark to find safe water, not that 7 out of 10 non local boats would bother to call up to find out where the channel was. Some would follow their tracks from when last up here years before and wonder why they suddenly came to a shuddering halt then start scratching their heads and say "what the f#$K went wrong

First thing . They crew that risked thier lives for this idiot are absolute champions, the fact you all went out in those conditions to rescue this man is amazing.

Second , If I was his insurer, I would investigate as to, why he has left a safe port to head into conditions that were clearly unsafe.( for a second time ) With a yacht worth that much money would any normal person risk the loss without getting a payout. ?

Just saying, because to me , the whole situation makes no sense at all .. Every one in WA was aware of the aproaching storm.

Third , I feel more sorry for the dog than some old French guy .

Risk Assessment

Thu, 2013-07-18 14:23

With any rescue/search involving bad weather each skipper will assess the situation and discuss with the crew. Even once out on the ocean we continue to assess as conditions change. There has only been 2 occasions in 23 years that I have had to turn back due to the conditions getting worse. On one of those occasions they ended up calling out the navy to assist as it was that bad. Luckily on both occasions there was no one out there. Our first priority is to our crew who have family waiting for them at home.

In this situation the Water Police stood our vessel down due to expected 7mtrs seas and 120km wind.

I went onboard  the new Water Police vessel at Hillarys and the skipper had aseesed the situation on the way up from Fremantle. He discussed the conditions with us and we were still happy to proceed. With our local knowledge and the experience of the skipper/crew we felt it was safe enough to navigate the reefs and shallow waters to get to the vessel. The only question we had was how we would get him onboard once we found him but decided to worry about that once we located him.

Alkimos , not done yet?

Fri, 2013-07-19 15:16

Call me a nanny , but I personally dont like that stretch of coast, never have, read too many

jack sue storys and witnessed some strange stuff myself up that way.

Not really applicable in this story as it should read,"' mad froggie heads into the storm in crappy boat, dog takes one

for the team'' and uncannly in the following article it mentions a ghostly dog!

Went up for a quick tailor sess this morn , none around so we had a quick look at the floundered craft, still there., and theres a chassis and engine , not from the boat

right next t

Ghosts

Stories of ghosts on-board the Alkimos started date back to the ships first construction in 1943. During her hasty construction, which was usual for Liberty Ships, it is said a number of welders were sealed between the hulls. Their ghosts were said to have haunted the ship ever since.

During the ship’s service there were numerous reports during the ships service of a ghostly dog being sighted in the ship’s engine room, and it is said a female caretaker suffered a serious fall resulting in the premature birth of her stillborn baby.

The stories of hauntings have continued since the wreck. In 1969, during salvage work for scrap metal, a number of welders were aboard the ship when it caught fire. A number of salvage workers have reported hearing eerie noises on the ship, wholeheartedly believing it to be haunted. The welders claimed to have heard footsteps on the ship, following them around at night, as well as strange cooking odours emanating from the galley.

Various onlookers to the wreck have claimed to see a ghostly man in rubber boots and oilskins walking along the wreck. Caretaker’s who worked on the wreck nick-named the apparition “Harry”, which has stuck with local cray fisherman who work near the Alkimos.

o it.
