Melaluka Rods on Ebay
Submitted by Kev on Wed, 2008-12-10 13:43
Anyone ever bought one of these rods? I personally have never heard of them. They are well cheap on Ebay but like my old man says "If somethings too good to be true, it probably is."
They look the part but are they...???
Cheers

I would steer away from ebay
I would steer away from ebay unless you know exactly what you're buying. Eg a well known rod/reel from a reputable seller.

Cheers Jay, the guys got
Cheers Jay, the guys got about 27000+ positive feedback and most of the buyers seem to be happy, but who knows, after one use the whole thing might fall apart! Just interested to hear any good/ bad stories about these rods. The same guy also sells the same brand reels at good prices, again who knows what the quality is like.

Bought a couple
of 330GTI rip offs as back ups - one seized up immediately and the other is powering on and has accounted for some nice pinks - not in my hands of course. The Melaluka rods are assembled in Aus - god knows where the blanks come from. Most of the stuff is Chinese and for me, back up only or for kids.

Ian, were the reels Melaluka or another cheap brand? The ones I looked at looked very smart for their price but god knows whats inside them!

For ebay, the seller rating
For ebay, the seller rating is usually whether the process went well, not a rating of the products. Means you are likely to get the product with minimal fuss.
For most people a cheapy is what they want and they'll be happy with it. Usually the rule is you get what you pay for (though theres also the law of diminishing returns, a $1000 whatever is hardly ever twice as good as a $500 whatever).
Also, you dont tend to find reviews of the cheaper gear by avid fishermen. I doubt tackletour have reviewed the durango combo, lol. If they're that cheap, you can just buy one to test it out and if its crap then you havent wasted much.

Hlokk, youve gone and put me
Hlokk, youve gone and put me off the idea- ha ha ha. I dont usually buy cheap stuff and to my wifes dismay, spend as much as I can on decent stuff hoping it lasts longer. Im going to have to start my whining tonight in order to get new gear!

Melaluka
Kev I have 1 and greeny also has one what size are you looking at. I use mine as a back up rod now I have the live fibre and saltist 50 but we have both caught fish on these rods and although they are not as good as the expensive stuff the road worked sweet for me. Caught a shark to about 18kg on mine and greeny has had some decent fish on his. Its like everyone says you get what you pay for but I think the rod are pretty good for the price
So many fishing spots. Not enough sickies!!!!!!!

Thanks Watto, I might get
Thanks Watto, I might get one as a spare. Will come in handy when father in law comes to visit and needs a rod. Not quite sure on size but I will probably look at the ones you guys have as you havent had any problems with them. Did you buy the reels too?
Cheers

Rods are ok
I fish with guys at work sometimes and both of them have them and are happy with the rods. They only use them for bottom bouncing local waters but they think they are ok

Nah don't know much about the reels. I have a surecatch bluestinger 425 on my 1.8m 15kg light game rod. I had a look at the reels and they look ok but because I had this spare reel I just put that on there

Brand was Pelagic
solidly made but just the same i was glad the seize up happened when it was wound a couple of times fresh out of the box - probably good entry level or back up.

Ebay bargains
Bought a Melaluka LD9000 reel, pulled it to bits before using it and found it not having any lubrication at all,oiled/greased it and have had no problems with it on pinkies, reds and bities. Also got a 20kg and a 25kg rods off ebay and have given them heaps of stick, they stand up to it the same as my brand name gear for about 1/5 of the price

Check them out
With the reels, pull them to bits and check if they have been lubed, there wasn't a drop in the LD9000 so it pays to check first

Overhead
Gold coloured lever drag overhead.I loaded it up with 80lb dyneema braid [ebay]Have given it heaps without any problems with it so far.I've caught sharks to over 2.5metre,red emps to 12kg,pinkies,baldies,the lot and its certainly paid the $43.50 including postage that I paid for it and the $24.70for the 500metres x 80lb braid, including postage.
Why pay top dollar for the same results??If it breaks I can still buy another and still be far in front
