Metro broadbill

Went for a look around the FADs today with the family to try for some mahi and tuna.

It was a lazy morning after a big night so we didn't hit the FADs until nearly 10:30.  Water temps were up around 24C but water was dirty.   In addition to a couple of light outfits for the small pelagics I decided to throw out a bigger lure on a 15kg outfit on the shotgun position as there were a few wahoo caught the previous weekend.

After bagging a couple of small SBT's for the kids we worked our way north along the FADs.   Water conditions didn't really improve but we persisted anyway.

Watching the gear from the bridge we got a bump on the shotgun then about 30 seconds later the rod went off.  Sarah grabbed the rod and although we had some nice weight we couldn't see the fish.   Following about a 10 minute fight we had the fish boat side and to our immense surprise it was a juvenile broadbill!

A broadbill of any size in the daytime on a surface lure is certainly something I don't think I'll ever see again.

When I first realised it was a billfish I thought it was a stripey, then definitely had to check twice when I realised it was a broadbill.

Cool

That's cool. Some days you just need to have a lure in the water.

 Good (and lucky!)

 Good (and lucky!) catch!

Quite unusual to get one on a trolled lure.

My observations from longlining many, that for game fishermen trolling lures will get 100's of marlin for maybe one sword, we would catch 100's of swords for a single marlin with stationary baits in the exact same area and time.
