Metro Marlin

Gday all First time poster long time reader,

Love my Marlin fishing and spend a fair bit of time chasing and catching them up north but have decided to put in some time this summer to hopefully chase one down here in perth, Im not asking for anyones spots as i can find my own just wondering if anyone puts the time in and has had much sucess and get onto any bigger tuna as by catch?

This is my first season in perth, im sure they are there when the warm water pushes down over the canyon, just gotta put the time in im guessing.....

Cheers

Yeah they have a site, but not really interested in paying a fee to join a club to be honest would rather spend the money on fuel and chase fish. Cheers anyway.

 trench , water temp change

Thu, 2018-02-01 18:38

trench , water temp change  ,  i havent really heard of big tuna bycatch trolling just heaps of smaller models  ,

chrisG and myself raised a good fish 2 seasons ago had him on lure for a solid 30sec smashing it all over the place then hooked only to spit lure little

 bit later.

another mate of mine managed to land 1 in the game fishing club comp the same season

another fish was landed last years comp

they are out there just takes some hours and sounds like you have brought some north skills so should be worth a crack.

those water temp charts are a massive bonus if you can get hold of them or no someone who can

its a bloody long way out and back so have your boat it good nick and use the rotto repeater on you radio

I’ve seen big schools of fat bluefin tuna up at ledge point but never have the gear on board to chase them as I always chase demersals

PGFC is a wealth of knowledge

Thu, 2018-02-01 18:24

PGFC have members who have a wealth of experience in Perth waters searching for Marlin
The membership is relatively cheap, and you're having a beer on the social nights with like minded people; you may even find a deckie there as generally most people aren't willing to buirn through a lot of fuel ($$) for the elusive billie
If the currents come in this year (hopefully loooking like they will), then we should have another good season, but once again, the guys at PGFC are usually on the money and in my experience are greats guys.
Just my thoughts, but if you join you have a great chance of meeting people like Neil Patrick (aka Mr HALCO), who has begged a heap of marlin off Perth who is happy to share knowledge of what to look for.
Fuel savings alone makes the membership worth it in my opinion.

Nothing like having one on the line; I'm yet to crack a 100lb fish so I'm still very much a beginner in that space

 Cheers for the comments Fellas,

Just wanted to hear from people that have been out and confirm that they are there and sounds like they are, Yep GillyL definatly will be watching the temp charts and looking for the temp change..... No dramas about the boat all in good nick and im confident in my boat and my own abblity offshore, But saying that definaly a long way once the wind turns and she gets lumpy can always stop at rotto for a beer or the night i guess!

Backlash your right mate im sure theres a a weatlh of info in the PGFC and ill look into it, Im happy to burn some fuel cause ya cant beat the feeling watching a bill dance off into the sunset and ive made it a mission to atleast raise one off perth...... just gotta put in the hours one and keep fingers crossed for some better weather..... Saturday looks the goods at this stage so im busy tying knots and rigging the gear up..... See yas out there. Im in a Bar crusher 615c so flick me a wave.

Also are do you guys pay the Marine rescue yearly here in perth or is it a donation system?

Cheers fellas

I launch out of Ocean Reef

Thu, 2018-02-01 20:17

I launch out of Ocean Reef and voluntarily pay them a $50/yr membership which gives me a number I don 't bother using. I reckon it's a cheap donation to those blokes who have my back... My wife rang them one trip lately because I stupidly let my phone go flat and they informed her I had logged off...

I think you can download the old PGFC newsletters on their site which are good reading...

Big SBTs...

Thu, 2018-02-01 20:31

...80kg+ range, well offshore. There's a commercial longline fishery for them, along with marlin and swords, but generally beyond the range of a trailer boat.

Typical SBTs in closer are battling to be ten kilos...your best chance at a 20+kg tuna is probably trolling around West End of Rotto, or near the Fads..yellowfin.

Area

Thu, 2018-02-01 21:32

What area are you based in?

That info on the tuna wasnt a rumour, Was a club members boat that hooked up.

A number of the PGFC members hold records for tuna caught at the trench too

They are out there

Thu, 2018-02-01 23:00

I've raised 7 or 8 over the last few years, tagged one blue marlin about 180kg and dropped another next to the boat.

Look at the charts, currents, temperatures and get an idea of the areas they might be.  Sometimes those area might be as far as 50nm out.

You have to be prepared to cover a lot of ground.  Unlike up north there is very little bait around, fewer fish and scattered further.  Overall numbers in any season depend a lot on climate conditions.

I will be out at the trench on Sat as well, might see you out there.

there was a Marlin caught at

Fri, 2018-02-02 08:16

there was a Marlin caught at 5 fathom back a few years ago! :-)
- but the trench is the place to be - as far as by-catch never caught tuna out that far but have got a wahoo about 10 years ago whilst trolling along the northern wall-
as other have said its a fair hike out there so safety first!
there was a very large blue apparently dropped at the boat - estimated to be around 600lbs+ - I don't know the story heard it through the grapevine - maybe someone on here has more detail?

Fri, 2018-02-02 09:15

All good info fellas, I’ll be concentrating on the southern wall and working it as much as I can to start with. Been looking looking and studying charts and navionics and there’s some promising ground so the rest of up to conditions from here on in.

Tim I’m based in Doubleview and usually launch from hillarys or leewin down by freo depending on my plan.

I’ll monitor the radio and am always happy to share if I’ve seen fish or bait when out wide so give me a yell if ya see me

cheers
