Baffling! How do you go from a huge bag limit to a ban overnight?

Garfish - Perth Metro
A consequence of last year's Australian Salmon run?
The Garfish have been really scarce in Perth Metro waters lately, and we have fished hard for them in competitions - don't think I have got one this season and total weigh in numbers are generally very low. Have Members noticed this in local waters?
Other bait fish are abundant but the gardies are rare, and the salmon run seems to be much slower? Hopefully WA Fisheries will publish a "simple English" reason for the ban and its theory on cause of decline.
Good on the Department for being proactive when a threat is detected.

To little lady( frank). 4 o'clock today he got officially told no more southern gardies to be caught. Apparently past parliament already. Still allowed to catch nrth ones. For some who may not know square ones ( I use to call them storm gardies) your allowed. Didn't see anything in papers nothing on radio . Got me.

Good luck
Good luck trying to police that ban. Most people would have no idea how to tell the difference.

Yep very strange the bag
Yep very strange the bag limits weren't decreased first. For ID sake the storm gars have a black spot on their back half.
Also not sure on a shortage. Still plenty on the south and east side of garden and still see plenty at night driving across the shallow weed beds

Just realised ...
...why my usual supplier hasn't been able to get me the usual 2x 14kg cartons for the annual Ningaloo trip.
She said they had really been chasing them, and had heard that there was heaps in Darwin available. So I have a half-dozen packages, and will just have to spend more time fishing for them up there.. We are getting pretty good at that, anyway.

Bouquets to the Mandurah Fisheries Office
Big bouquets to the ladies in the Mandurah fisheries office for their help by providing a 101 sheet on how to identify Southern Garfish from their cousins the Robust Garfish.(AKA Storm Garfish)
Quite frankly I couldn't think what was the difference, now I have a nice printed out sheet showing the differences between them and the reason there is a ban on catching the Southern Garfish.
Which is there has been a large decrease in their bio mass.
The ban applies from Lancelin down to 33 degrees south (just short of Myalup)
