Midday metro Tailor

After seeing Leighroys post I decided to have a crack at the Winter fishing myself.

Headed north of quinns for a bit of a walk and found a good looking reef.

Hooked a big one but lost him and after about 50 (lol) more casts managed this guy.

Put up an amazing fight as I had my drag so loose from fiddling with a snag prior!

Released him and checked surroundings for confirmation on my new and only tailor spot.

Maybe I should get out a bit more in Winter......

Sorry about the pic-solo fisherman with a phone- Oh and this has no reflection on my

favourite shapes, I much prefer BBQ and Nacho Cheese :)

This arvo not a sniff fished from quinins dog beach up to the wooden steps at jindalee. 3hours of walking and casting trying twistys poppers raiders u name it, just my bad luck I guess. Do I need to walk further???

Hey Mate

I doubt u need to walk further and Id say its better to find a reef and work it for a while.

The amount of sessions I have had with no fish is unbelievable, sometimes its your day and sometimes its not.

But keep trying different things, times, places till you find something that works. I have never even had a follow of a popper in the

metro area so from my minimal experience I'd go for twisty's and mullies first.

Wait how can I give out advice I've caught about 3 tailor total lol!

 try the 1oz richter plugs

Tue, 2011-07-26 23:20

try the 1oz richter plugs Gjoe, tailor smash them! Usually cost around $8 avail. at most tackle stores. For a surface lure it has a much better action than a popper in my opinion

theyre great lures, theyre the only lures i use when fishing for big tailor around reefs. Have a look at the Jetski Photo album in the photos gallery for some of the fish I've caught. Let me know how you go

Hey Beau

any reason you only use the 1oz size? Personally i would think there a little small.

I use the 2-3-4oz down here for Tailor and Salmon, in my top 3 lures shorebased for sure.

 mostly just coz im using

Wed, 2011-07-27 22:09

mostly just coz im using light gear. Caught all my tailor over 50cms on 8lb mono and 2-4kg bream stix, the 1oz already puts a solid bend in the tip haha. Ive seen a couple 80cm+ fish try smash them on the surface so I know that the 1oz still works on the bigger fish.

All good

they obviously work for you so maybe I should give them a crack. Could be a little light for landbased though?

 yes definately but i cant

Thu, 2011-07-28 02:12

yes definately but i cant seem to find solid tailor landbased anyway, not that ive actually tried hard looking though!

Just bought a 7'6 Nitro Magnum Butt 4-6kg on the weekend which would be a more appropriate rod for LB me thinks

 its a lovelyyyyy rod! Picked

Thu, 2011-07-28 11:29

its a lovelyyyyy rod! Picked it up 20% off on the weekend, did the ring around to the stores during the week and only one out of 4 stores in metro had it in stock and they only had one, so there i was Saturday morning waiting for the store doors to swing open hehe. Paired it up with a Ci4 4000 reel and is goint to be my all rounder rod! Tailor, salmon and still flimsy enough for snappers on plastics :D I realy want to get stuck into some rat sambos and kings too!

Nice looking Tailor Gjoe - well done

Thu, 2011-07-28 13:02

Looks like between 50-60cms or even better.

I good reward for working things hard. As for the spot, anywhere alone the coastline at the moment that offers predatory shelter for Tailor will be a potential success. By that I mean white water. No need for everyone to flock to Quinns. As for the twisties it's IMO a great choice and size and obviously gives you some results.

I am still out to lunch on the Richtor plugs. I have had good results and so have my mates. I still have the opionion that they are a bit "slow" though. I prefer a weighted popper.
