Mira Flores wreck. Dive vid

Hi all, Did a dive vid last night on the Mira Flores wreck off narrowneck at Rotto. For years I've had an interest in the history of the WA coast, I always find it hard to find any dive related info on alot of the old wrecks so I wanted to do a few of the wrecks around Perth and put them on youtube. They always make pretty boring dives for most people as they're usually just a pile of overgrown wreckage on the seafloor. I always find them pretty interesting anyway and get a kick out of reading up on them and going out every couple of dives for a visit to tick another off the list.

Vid is of the Mira Flores wrecked in 1886, It sits on two levels of the reef, at around 5metres and the stern in 11metres on sand. Its a pretty surgey area even when we dived it in low swell. Next time I'm gonna ditch the head strap for the GoPro as its pretty shakey and hard to find a good few seconds to make a smoothe clip. Just need to make the decision to pry the cray loop out of my hand and leave it in the boat.... can never seem to do it and it gets in the way a bit.

Hope some others out there get a small kick out of it, watch it in HD. Full screen is good as it has a bit of text at the start and end.

I've held a long time interest in the wrecks off the WA Coast - must be the treasure hunter in me - lol. Although not a diver I enjoy the historical aspect of reading about the circumstances that caused the wreck. You may already know about the series of books by Lynn Cairns & Graeme Henderson titled "Unfinished Voyages" Western Australian Shipwrecks - some really detailed info in this series - just looked up Mira Flores and theres 3 pages dedicated to her. Also quite some detail related to the position of the wreck. Anyway hope you can use this info to assist with more wreck dives and their associated backgrounds of the ships.

Don't be too hard on the vid. Watching it had me thinking of doing a dive. I'd probably keep the cray loop for the just in case situation. I lookforward to your next post.

Its good fun, pretty new to editing and thinking about how to put it together, learning something new each time. Next time clip the cray loop to the BCD!

If you would like a good read you should try a book by Hugh Edwards "Dead Mens Silver".

Really makes you want to do a bit of exsploration, great book.

Thanks guys, yea have read all of Hugh Edwards wreck related stuff plus a whole library of books and newspaper articles on local WA wrecks both found and still lost, certainly does make you want to sell up and buy all the expensive toys to go wreck hunting, unfortunately most of the wrecks that can be found easily, have been found and if you do find one of historical significance after investing a lot of $$$ its the property of the government. It is the thrill of being the discoverer but an expensive thrill for sure!

Glad you enjoyed it Perry, the reason I was motivated for it was for guys like you. A lot of wreck buffs out there may not have the opportunity to dive but can still have a chance to see what the wreck sites look like. Hopefully will get a few more wrecks done over time.

Great video

Thanks for sharing your wreck diving with us, reefmonkey. Just goes to show there's lots to see other than fish, crays, etc. and gives those who don't dive, a greater appreciation of what's 'down there'.

I've dived on a few of the popular wrecks in our southwest and while holidaying in Bali and it's a fascinating world, that's for sure. I've seen some footage from dive trips to Truk Lagoon and that would be an awesome place to go diving.

Look forward to seeing more of your wreck dive videos.

regards
