being a non diver i love all the uderwater vids to get a better appreciation of what the ground looks like out of perth, that would have been frustrating no doubt with all the berried females. cheers
Was with the gopro with the dive housing and a red filter.
Was a bit frustrating with all the berried ones but was my deepest dive to date so we were pretty stoked when we surfaced to have found that patch of turf. Had a school of about 10 little dhuis go past at one stage but footage didn't show up very well unfortunately so didn't make the cut.
I am trying to work out depths at which the females are berried/ tar spot / setose etc etc so that i can stay away from them. The last few dives i have done have gone like this.
26m - Tar Spots but not that many
22m - lots of kakkas
18m - All berried!!
Your 45m all berried blew my theory out of the water haha, as i was thinking of going deeper, i guess not that deep!
We dived a spot near by last week and was similar, spent all our time moving the berried ones out of the way to find a keeper. Had the torch out and all we kept seeing were berries.
Went in to a spot in 27 and i got a bag of 8 in 1 dive.
Ahh laugh - reminds me of another deep dive spot we have, it's called the dollhouse for the same reasons.
On those spots, best to eyeball them before lifting them, you can usually tell if they're berried because you can see it with a good torch, and they hold their tails out differently.
You end up looking for smaller ones (size males), or long legs (jumbos).
That's my anchor, usually tuck it under a rock to make sure boat doesn't float away but was dead still out there that day so no worry of boat drifting off. When it's windy up top I actually use 2 anchors just to be sure.
Rusty we were just on air, probably pushed our bottom time limits a bit and had a very long stop on the way up as well - vis was awesome out there and probably half of that in at 30m that day. Didn't see any size dhuis, had a school of about 10 little ones swim by at one stage though. Max depth was 45 but that was where the anchor dropped and we spent most of our time on that wall at the beginning which would have been about 38 ish.
Lamby keep me posted, fits is keen as well, will pack some tanks and see how brave we are down shark alley way.

Great video action
Hi tiimmbo
Great footage and pretty good vis, too.
Were you diving on enriched air because your bottom time was quite long, if you were at 45m the whole dive?
Never been that deep but I've heard from a friend who has been getting quite a few at similar depths.
I did catch a glimpse of a couple of small dhuies during your dive...did you see any sized ones?

Thanks Tim
It looks like good ground, pity about the berried females but it's a positive sign for the crayfish stocks.
Nice to see juvenile dhuies hanging around....must be some big ones out there somewhere!
Great snaring practice and a nice catch!
