a mixed bag of fish...
talking to the local tackle shop, i shared how we had - wot i perceived to be 'a great nights fishing' with a mixed bag. we caught numerous tailor, silver bream, banded sweep, herring, eightbar cod and almost something massive which turned out to be a dolphin...
when i bought up the eightbar cod he said its not good to see many of those around?? could someone shed some light on this for me please?
btw i have officially been outbreamed by the wife to be - she caught a thumper at 42cm off the rocks in the port, my pb was 38cm. the thing violently shook itself off the hook while we were trying to get some happy snaps, the next 10 mins were spent getting grazed, cramped and saturated while crawling under bone crushing sized rocks, trying to get it back into the water. i always thought bream were a river fish, i was dumbfounded when we were catching them in the port.

Dolphin's are small time..lol
Dolphins do get hooked when they swim into your bait/line.
If i can work out how to insert a photo i will show you a pic of my Scotish mate hooked up to a Humpback Whale.. It was farkin funny to watch his reaction when he went from yelling about the biggest fish he has ever caught, thinking monster Sambo or something, to a whale..lol
Sorry need help with photo inserting in replies..:(

Whale catching
happened to me not long ago. Was out the back of point peron, threw out a squid to float and on the drop it took off and took off fast. With the drag locked up on my Abu 7000 this thing was still just peeling line off at a massive rate. I called it for a big shark then a whale surfaced about 100m away so realised what was going on. Once I saw that I made the call to cut the line but a few seconds later it dropped off. Must've been hooked on a barnacle or something.
Just freak timing with that one..

i would say you caught a charlie court/ chinaman cod
Unless you were fishing in 100+ m then you may have caught an 8 bar / greybanded cod

Whales
Not sure about Sea-Weeds catch but sure it was the whale as the line went from 30m down to the surface and that was where the whale surfaced.
That was just after they surfaced less than 20m from the boat and were heading in our general direction.
I will put the photo's up in a seperate thread as after reading the bit about posting in thread replies i had a headache..lol

no i didnt 'hook' the
no i didnt 'hook' the dolphin, line was peeling off the spool like it was going out of fashion, when i tightened the drag and yanked the rod it went dead, i had herring on as live bait but only thru the tail, i dare say the dolphin took the front end of the fish and i just pulled the hook outa the herrings tail. and they were definately eighbar / banded cod, only small but around the rocks. so noone knows y these are bad?

i wouldnt intentionally hook,
i wouldnt intentionally hook, or keep, a dolphin hooked, i was all excited when the reel went mental, but then it went dead, and the dolphin breached. they are very smart creatures. besides....i dont know why anyone would target them, when you can get them 'free' in cans of tuna :P

Thanks Hutch, the Western Wirrah is definately what it is. found a google link to a page on fishwrecked with a photo of one. the species guide looks nothing like it hence my confusion, but after reading juveniles have no spots and can have stripes...
