Mobile Nextwork and Issues
Interesting Carassius!
Your input pn the Exmouth Reception thread made interesting reading - I wasn't aware that some of the T Shops where owned by T. (I worked for T for a few years in Internet Direct and Ecommerce - Tried to get a job down in Albany - no go) .
I recently moved to next G - no improvement on reception down here. I'd still like to see one network and govt controlled shared towers. I fear that the current situation does not give economies of scale and is duplicitously wasteful. Sometimes, competition does not deliver the best customer outcome or serve their interests. (And don't get me started on community obligation! LOL)
I'd also like to see a move away from the deceptive 'xx%' of population - which means nothing and legislatively enforced (and more accurate and useful 'xx%' of Australia (geography). That 98% of the population (or whatever it is currently purported to be) means jack sh*t to me if I have lousy reception. (And yes, I have a 'ticked' phone).
I'm told metal roofs impede the signal. Is that correct? Can you get an external antennae, the house version of a car kit? Would it make a difference? if the answer to both of those questions are yes, does it come with blue tooth connectivity and is there range/signal barrier issue?

I deal with wireless, but
I deal with wireless, but mostly 2.4 & 5.8Ghz.
1) Yes, a tin roof will kill signal.
2) You can get/make "house kits". You just get a cradle, cable and antenna to point at the closest/least congested tower. Actually I was just quoting up someone in the bush on a long range wireless unit so they can get 3G+HSDSPA in the bush, that should be up to about 7Mbps at their home, for their net connection as their is no ADSL available.

Thanks Till - Can you?
Thanks Till - do you know if you can get them ready made? As I mentioned - I don't want the encumbrance of a cradle - I want wireless (bluetooth) connectivity - hot spot the house if you like.

unfortunately ther is no
unfortunately ther is no wireless booster that I've heard of.
metal roofs do impede signal but you can get a ruggedised ZTE phone from T that an external aerial clips on but has minimum impact on size but improves penetration, I know a lot of miners I've sold them to with data plans - instant wireless broadband with 7mbs speed.
as for the "98% population" it is a problem especially from cowboy dealers (perhaps why johns don't sell T) ad to the fact that no 2 next g phones give same coverage or in your case, building penetration! all to confusing!

Thanks carassius
Appreciate the feedback carrasius. Looks like I'm stuck with the existing situation then - unless I change the roof.

T is investing heavily into this network so it will continue to improve, what phone do you have? there are software patches from manufacturers to keep the phone up to date with the network? might be a bug fix available?

You cant really get a
You cant really get a bluetooth one, its gotta attach to the antenna socket on the back of the cradle kit.
The next closest thing you can do is buy a dock n talk from the US (they're a bit flakey and there is no aus distro anymore) and then use it to attach the dock n talk to a dect phone for around the house. You would still need the antenna etc, you just clip it to the cradle you attach the phone to when you're in the house
That way you get an in-house booster.

Thanks Till and Davey!
Thanks Till - sounds like too much messing around - but appreciate the input
Hi Davey - Hmmmm, as the old saying goes, you get what you paid for. But (at the risk of this looking like a whirlpool post ), it had the Telstra 'tick' - so it had to be suitable right?
