Mobile phone apps

G'day all, a question I know jack about. Are apps for phones specific for each phone? Like is an app for an iphone also ok for a Blackberry or Nokia E71 or similar? I'm looking at a new smart phone but need to find out a bit more about them or do I stick with my old type of mobile that has been dropped, soaked, bumped, dumped, and everything in between and still makes a call or text when needed.
Cheers
Dale

If app selection is
If app selection is important, then really probably the best choice is iphone, but they are fragile. I wouldn't buy one without insurance, I've broken one myself.
In the US, it seems that motorola has already made a ruggardised phone call the i1, but they also have a new one coming called the Jordan, and its based on android. They say waterproof to 10m, and IP67 cert as well!

I've been leaning towards
I've been leaning towards the Nokia E71 as I like Nokia as a rule, keyboard is little on the cramped side, but I can probly live with that.
