Monte's Trip Advice

 Hi All,

I'm a relative newbie here so please be kind to me!

I'm hoping to take a trip out to the Monte Bellos in April this year. I'm planning to launch and retrieve at Onslow as I'm unsure as to whether I will struggle to launch and more importantly recover my boat from the Fortescue river site. I have an 8m glass boat and will probably be loaded to the gunnels with fuel, water and p1ss.

Any advice as to the suitability to launch from here would be warmly received.

Also any tips as to an appropriate camping base on the islands would really help. I guess I'd just like to be able to find a safe anchorage site without having to burn up miles of fuel searching. I've done the charts and google earth thing, but nothing really replaces the knowledge of those who've done it before.

Many thanks in anticipation of yor help.

Cheers

Steve

8m glass! big boat for fortesque

Probably best bet is onslow unless you drive

Only stayed over there once myself but do have mates who frequently visit the monte's and stay in the same location

We stay in Champagne bay (Actually just in front of it ona  little beach.

Champagne bay is kinda in the middle of the monte's, so a little further to travel (We came from Karratha). But has good access to anywhere really.

Champagne bay has a mooring in it to tie your boat up to if you wanted to, and if not used. If you decide not too remember there are big tides and almost the whole bay will empty of water excep the small channel at the enterance (where the mooring is).

The entrance driving in isnt very wide, from memory 15-20 metres maybe.

Look on the montebello.com.au website and you will see 'about' tab up the top and at the bottom of the drop down menu there is a 'getting there & map' section. Click on that and you will see the maps down the bottom

Fishing wise, options are endless really. never done overly well on GT's, mainly managing 5-10kg models. Dont discount flicking plastics in the shallows around some of the islands. Trout, GT's, Queenies, Spangles and even some thumper chinaman.

Trolling around Trimoulie island in 4-12m of water prodiced trouth, GT's, mackies, and Rankin. Gold lures did the job.

Download google earth and look at the montes, specifically trimoulie island. Kind of to the east of the main beach you will see a small rock. Try that place out you will have an absolute ball on light gear. Queenies go nuts on the outgoing tide, Trout holding up underneath, GT's busting you up. Jump in for a snorkle and you will be amazed at whats under this rock. It drops down to about 8m

Champagne bay itself has some rocks leading into it. Some nice jacks along those walls. Also has some mangroves along the bay (as do some others) which if your good enough can find a muddy or 2 :)

Heading out the west side is where most people head looking for bigger bottom species. Getting to the west form champagne is a little challenging, but if you do it on a medium tide you really should be ok. Head north from champagne and take one of the larger openings heading west (you can see this on google earth or google maps.) Take your time, go slow and watch the water. Most of the passages we went through were very deep, 8-15 metres. Trolling lures through these is productive too. Water really flys through these passages, you are sometimes doing 6-8 knots but not moving!!!

Once out through to the west side, there is an outer reef which pretty much breaks all the way along except a few passages. Again if you sit and water the water for some time, you can usually pick the gaps. But inside the reef has some awesome fishing and spearing. Shallow water stuff, 2-6 metres. trout everywhere. The inside of the reef is similar to ningaloo at exmouth. The charter boats always take their punters in there for a snorkle / spear / crays. Also Any exposed rocks similar to the one i mentioned east of Trimoulie also hold bucket loads of fish, big spangles, GT's, Queenies you name it!

Outside the reef is where it gets read fun! chasing big bottom species, mackies and tuna.

If you look on google earth or google maps you will see towards the north of the reef a big kinda channel that darts back in towards the islands. Cant remember the name of this but its renound for BIG mackies, GT's and even big Jacks. But also plenty of sharks!!!! This where surfers also go at the monte's.

Trying to remember the name of the rocks northwest of the montes, only about 7-10 mile from memory possibly Called Tyroll rocks?? might not be but hopefully someone else can fill in this one. Good fishing out there. Big mackies, GT's, even billies. As well as Reds, Trout, Rankin on the bottom. Key is, no need to go too close to the lump for bottom fish :)

Hope this helps and enjoy, April is right in the middle of the better time to go to the montes!

As i did say earlier and others will, BIG tides so remember your depths. Keep a spotter looking out when travelling through the islands. You will notice on the low tides new islands pop up you didnt see previously!!

We did find travelling in the larger body of water between trimoulie and the smaller islands 'ok' on the low tides, still have 2-3m of water on the lowest tides. But we did not travel too close to the islands.

One more tip, take a shade tent! your going to need it!

Some others may suggest closer options ont he east side of the montes

Roughly halfway

Tue, 2012-02-07 21:14

Roughly halfway between Karratha and Fortescue. Easy launch and retrieve on the right tide for your size boat. Little bit further than Fortescue, but shorter than Dampier to the Montes. Plug Gnoorea into Google earth and the ramp/camping area is to South East of Regnard Island. Hope this helps. Good info from Bodie and POC above.

Cheers
