Platforms out the back of Rosemary Island
Submitted by kelsea on Wed, 2012-02-15 19:23
We have a 19ft Southwind UB580 Centre console and are looking at heading out the back of Rosemary Island to the Platforms for a fish. As we are new to town and trying to build our knowledge does any one have any recomendations. The tubs good on fuel using just under a litre a nautical mile at about 20knots and has an 80litre tank. All help and advice is greatly appreciated and hopefully one day we can be the ones giving advice to new comers, cheers.

Macs, trout and emperors are
Macs, trout and emperors are in abundance up here, the family certainly gets fed well. Really want to start heading out and having a good look around with a bit of confidence.

The ships anchorage is where
The ships anchorage is where everyone trolls for billies. The end few channel markers are good for sp or jigs, got trevs, macks, Cobia etc off of them. Bottom fishing was hard work, but we were only there for a week. Not a bad spot to explore!

dont live there any more but
dont live there any more but was around for a few years. spots for a crack on the bottom that i went to are north of rosemary (not necessarily around any rigs) and heading straight out west. just troll and weatch the sounder for action or drift aimlessly. you will eventually come across some good ground. red emperor, saddletail, trout, spanglies, rankin cod, trevs, etc etc are around
in terms of your boat, i had a 19ft boat, but 300L of fuel for a bit more confidence. wasn't unusual to be 20 - 30nm out. as i said, never really went to any rigs but they are a fair way. i'd start with a full tank, see how far you can get on a third to make sure you have two thirds left to get back and in case anything hits the fan. also obviously epirb and radio.

The jacket doesn't offer anything special
Sound around and fish structure is a far better bet (smaller bommies often hold great trout - larger areas get a bit of attention)

to get to Stag and Wandoo
to get to Stag and Wandoo you'd need more fuel, it's a 80Nm round trip on average and you'd be on funes if everything worked for you, i'd head west of eaglehawk and drift around in anywhere from 30m to 7m, the current is strong but you'll find the fish. Trout, chinamen, snapper, bluebone and macs in the deeper parts etc etc.
